We’re incredibly excited that Seattle Parks and Seattle Tilth were able to compress a two-phase master plan into a single project, but the result has been a very aggressive schedule for the design phase! For inspiration, we’ve been looking at pragmatic agricultural structures, both the simple closed forms of storage sheds and more “prismatic” shapes of greenhouses and barns. Greenhouses are particularly intriguing in the way the inside reveals a complicated structure and interior volume that is barely suggested by their taut and simple exterior form. Sited to preserve the maximum agricultural land, the Classroom Building is nestled into a hillside along the east edge of the property. IPOGEA Research Centre on Local and Traditional Knowledge International Centre for Traditional Knowledge against desertification and for a sustainable future in the Euro-Mediterranean Traditional Knowledge constitutes the ancient knowledge of humanity, the deepest layer on which our science and culture have developed, the local solutions that have allowed the creation and management of ecosystems and cultural landscapes on the entire surface of the planet.

It enables the development of solutions with a low energy and resource use, that are able to adapt to environmental variability and to react to emergencies and catastrophes in flexible and multifunctional ways. Today, while entire planet systems risk ecological collapse, Traditional Knowledge shows how to interact with the environment enhancing its resource potential without exhausting it. Thanks to UNESCO’s contribution a prototype system, was developed and presented during the UNCCD Nairobi Conference in October 2005.

Baskets have been replaced by plastic and other kinds of factory-made containers in almost every area of life, appearing today mainly as twee Easter decorations. Making them has become synonymous with wasting time – “basket-weaving” in the USA is slang for an easy lesson for slow students. The craft of basketry, however, might be one of our species’ most important and diverse technologies, creating homes, boats, animal traps, armour, tools, cages, hats, chariots, weirs, beehives, shelters and furniture, as well as all manner of containers. Basket weaving makes use of fast-growing biodegradable materials -- branches, twigs or shoots -- that requires the forest to be cultivated rather than cleared.

Basketry allows almost anyone, with little or no money and few tools, to create a large variety of useful goods in a way that is one hundred percent sustainable. Development & Disaster Relief. ConceptMODEL. Ri Channel. Free University of Bozen · Bolzano - Admin English Home>Prof.
