Building a Lean Startup using Lego – Part 1. Do Schools Kill Creativity – A Response to Ken Robinson | Cafe Philosophy. By BRENT SILBY Robinson argues that schools are primarily concerned with conformity and that this has a negative impact on creativity. He suggests that by grouping students by age, delivering a standard curriculum, and testing them against standardized criteria, schools are essentially diminishing the individuality and creativity of students. In his Do Schools Kill Creativity TED Talk, Robinson states that: “…all kids have tremendous talents. And we squander them, pretty ruthlessly.” He goes on to suggest that “creativity is now as important as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status”. Robinson seems to be implying that schools currently place little value on creativity. Nevertheless, Robinson has made this claim. So, what is going on here? It is interesting to note Robinson’s use of the term “divergent thinking”. Robinson suggests that schools need to focus on the individual student rather than treating them as identical products.
The paper clip: a creative exercise. Ingredients One paper clip, 25 minutes, your imagination. Assignment Generate at least 25 great creative ideas to promote the utility and versatility of the paper clip. (After all, it is an under appreciated occupant of supply closets everywhere.) Process Work in teams of five, but for the first five minutes no talking allowed. Criteria for deciding Do you like it, really like it? Hints and stimulae What if the paper clip were huge? What if Marcel the Shell used it? What if it were a metaphor? What if the world were attacked by Origami? What if Banksy created graffiti with it? What if it were a Guinness record? What if it starred in the SI bathing suit issue? What if it came in a little blue box? What if it were a political statement? What if it had an arch rival? What if Lady Gaga’s incorporated it into her shoe collection? What if it were an amusement park ride? I tried this exercise yesterday as a way to inspire students in my Strategic Creative Development class to think more creatively.

Toys that teach Empathy – Twenty One Toys. Why LEGO Serious Play works | Mastering the Obvious. “The opposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression.” – Dr. Stuart Brown, in a magnificent TED talk on the importance of play (posted here in case you haven’t already seen it): I know that I overuse the word “magic” to describe what happens during LEGO Serious Play (LSP), but I can’t stop myself.
When a group of people sit around a table, each outfitted with a little box of fairly unremarkable plastic bricks, and start building as a way of exploring a topic of common interest, what happens really is magic: the stories, the laughter, the incredible richness of thought and feeling that can be expressed through just a few minutes of assembling LEGO models and sharing a brief story is dazzling, every single time. Magical, really. Except it’s not ‘magic’ – no illusions, no trickery, no magic wands.
LSP is, however, grounded strongly in learning theory and epistemology. LSP works because it engages participants. And, perhaps most importantly, LSP is fun! Like this: Cynefin Lego Game. Using Lego, you go through four exercises where the problem to solve and the context you work in is designed to create a simple, complicated, complex and chaotic system. Why You’d Use It When leading or managing agile transitions, it is important to know what type of system you are dealing with. Timing The game shouldn’t take more than 60 minutes. LSP-01. Why Lean Canvas vs Business Model Canvas? I often get asked why I created a different adaptation from the original Business Model Canvas by Alex Osterwalder. Lately, this question has bubbled up in frequency which is why I decided to take the time to outline the thought process that went into creating Lean Canvas. First a quick timeline. Timeline May 2009 I was first exposed to the Business Model Canvas through Alex Osterwalder’s book: “Business Model Generation”. While I found the book beautifully illustrated, I originally dismissed the canvas approach as “too simple”. Many of the examples in the book illustrated the business models of well known companies like Apple and Skype – after they were successful.
Jun 2009 It was not until I saw fellow entrepreneur Rob Fitzpatrick’s variation (Startup Toolkit) that incorporated Steve Blank’s worksheets from “The Four Steps to the Epiphany” that I took a more serious look at the canvas. Design Goals “Startups operate under conditions of extreme uncertainty.” – Eric Ries Other questions. Lego Serious Play | Lean Startup | Lean Canvas | Strategy. If you follow the lean startup philosophy you will understand that words can mean a lot. What I mean is that when you try to capture the essence of the assumptions behind your business model on a single page with something like the strategy canvas, every word you use can be very important. Each word actually makes a difference and finding the right few words to capture all that insight you and your team have in your heads so that it will fit within the physical boundaries of the canvas segments can be quite difficult.
In theory forcing us to make it concise is good, it means we should really pick the right words, be careful with our language and make sure that the few words scrawled on Post-it notes in each of the canvas segments hold the same meaning for each member of the team. Of course its so important because if you are using a lean startup approach your team members will use these words on a daily basis to design the experiments to test the key assumptions in the business model. In the light of upcoming training on combining Lego Serious Play methodology with Business Model Canvas – Serious Play Pro community members have come to ask what is this all about. Why Playing with LEGO® is so Important! I know that my desire to get into engineering was significantly influenced by my playing with LEGO® as a child. I loved the space sets and recall many, many hours playing with them. I would build something, play with it, change it, play some more, change it again, etc. I was always tinkering with my designs. Always learning and making improvements. I was still playing with these sets in college and I still have many of these pieces.
It is clear to me that the combination of rules and structure (bricks only connect in certain ways and there are a limited set of parts) along with the flexibility to be creative (there are so many connection combinations) is what engineering is all about. Engineers create useful products from combinations of elements (analogous to the LEGO® bricks, plates, etc.) that must adhere to the laws of physics (analogous to the ways the LEGO® elements mate). This is the way New Product Development should be! FTPI News ข่าวสาร เรื่องราวความรู้ด้านการเพิ่มผลผลิต. Lego Serious Play card deck for trainers | Design Thinking, Research and Service Design. Today I was lucky enough to get a place on a Lego Serious Play workshop run by David Gauntlett, who uses lego to conduct all kinds of interesting research in Media, Art and Design at the University of Westminster. The aim of the session was to explore the use of Lego as a tool for gathering qualitative data during the research process, as well as reflecting upon my own PhD experiences so far and learning from other people’s experiences. Using Lego for metaphorical modelling David explained that the idea behind Lego Serious Play is that by using a visual aid the participants are encouraged to think about their experiences and opinions and represent them in model form. The idea is that it gives people a new way to express and explore complex subjects and ideas through a creative method. Getting used to building with Lego We started out by building a free form creature, which could be any life form, as realistic or fantastical as you like.
