He suggests that by grouping students by age, delivering a standard curriculum, and testing them against standardized criteria, schools are essentially diminishing the individuality and creativity of students. In his Do Schools Kill Creativity TED Talk, Robinson states that: “…all kids have tremendous talents. And we squander them, pretty ruthlessly.” Robinson seems to be implying that schools currently place little value on creativity. Nevertheless, Robinson has made this claim. So, what is going on here? It is interesting to note Robinson’s use of the term “divergent thinking”. Robinson suggests that schools need to focus on the individual student rather than treating them as identical products. LSP-01. Why Lean Canvas vs Business Model Canvas? I often get asked why I created a different adaptation from the original Business Model Canvas by Alex Osterwalder.
Lately, this question has bubbled up in frequency which is why I decided to take the time to outline the thought process that went into creating Lean Canvas. First a quick timeline. Timeline May 2009 I was first exposed to the Business Model Canvas through Alex Osterwalder’s book: “Business Model Generation”. While I found the book beautifully illustrated, I originally dismissed the canvas approach as “too simple”. Lego Serious Play. What I mean is that when you try to capture the essence of the assumptions behind your business model on a single page with something like the strategy canvas, every word you use can be very important. Each word actually makes a difference and finding the right few words to capture all that insight you and your team have in your heads so that it will fit within the physical boundaries of the canvas segments can be quite difficult. In theory forcing us to make it concise is good, it means we should really pick the right words, be careful with our language and make sure that the few words scrawled on Post-it notes in each of the canvas segments hold the same meaning for each member of the team.
Of course its so important because if you are using a lean startup approach your team members will use these words on a daily basis to design the experiments to test the key assumptions in the business model. I would build something, play with it, change it, play some more, change it again, etc. I was always tinkering with my designs. Always learning and making improvements. I was still playing with these sets in college and I still have many of these pieces. It is clear to me that the combination of rules and structure (bricks only connect in certain ways and there are a limited set of parts) along with the flexibility to be creative (there are so many connection combinations) is what engineering is all about. Today I was lucky enough to get a place on a Lego Serious Play workshop run by David Gauntlett, who uses lego to conduct all kinds of interesting research in Media, Art and Design at the University of Westminster.
