The first version of our new HTML5 Moodle Mobile app was recently released on Google Play (for Android) and Apple iTunes (for iOS)!

We’ve called it version 1.2 because the feature set is inherited from the deprecated iOS-only app “My Moodle” which reached version 1.1. Thanks to all the developers who’ve worked on delivering this version of the app: Juan Leyva, Jerome Mouneyrac, Barbara Ramiro and Josep Gifreu. The new app has been designed as a platform with the following strengths: It is secureIt can work offlineIt makes some Moodle operations faster and more convenientIt will support notifications on all platforms (coming soon)It can be branded by any Moodle site easily using CSSIt can be customised and expanded by an institution (the code is open source) Our strategy going forward is two-fold: The development of the official Moodle Mobile app will continue under the main guidance of CV&A Consulting (our trusted Moodle Partner in Barcelona, Spain). One of the questions that is commonly asked by new students and parents alike is: What is this thing called Moodle we keep hearing about? It’s a fair enough question and, as with many things on the internet, a quick Google will often find you answers of one kind or another. Unfortunately, these quick and easy answers are not always that helpful, evidenced by this definition: The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. Simply put, Moodle is a Learning Management System - more jargon for what is effectively a website with a focus on learning online and one that aims to engage students through interactive activities.

Hello all Moodlers, It's my pleasure to put this cherry on the top of the collective cake that is Moodle 2.5, and to announce that it is now ready for you to use! (Download a package or use Git) This is the first release under the new May/November release schedule, so we had one less month than usual. Still we collectively managed to close an impressive record 705 issues in that time, and we had code contributions from 112 developers, the most ever in a single major release. This release has also been the most-tested in history.

In addition, we also released updates for our stable branches: 2.4.4, 2.3.7 and 2.2.10. For teachers and students: Badges Badges are a nice way to acknowledge good work, and it's now possible for teachers to award course badges based on a variety of chosen criteria.

These badges are fully compatible with Mozilla Open Badges. This blog post has some interesting reflection on when badges might be most appropriate: The Badges of Oz Forms are much shorter Moodle has a lot of settings and features, which means some of our forms have been getting rather long. We've made changes so that non-essential settings on forms are collapsed by default, yet you can quickly access them when you need them. Moodleman: #moodle 2.5 now has an interface... Moodle Mobile. This official app will ONLY work with Moodle sites that have been set up to allow it. Please talk to your site administrator if you have any problems connecting. If your site has been configured correctly, you can use this app to: - Browse the content of your courses, even when offline- Receive instant notifications of messages and other events- Quickly find and contact other people in your courses- Upload images, audio, videos and other files from your mobile device- View your course grades- and more!

Following the releases of Moodle 2.4.2, 2.3.5 and 2.2.8 on Monday 11 March 2013, it was discovered that a serious regression (MDL-38474) had been introduced immediately prior to the release.

Due to the severity of the issue we have release new versions with this issue fixed and removed the previous versions from download channels. If you have upgraded your site to 2.4.2, 2.3.5 or 2.2.8 then we strongly recommend that you upgrade your site again as soon as possible. There were no security issues fixed in these new versions, however there were security issues resolved in 2.4.2, 2.3.5 and 2.2.8, so if you have not yet updated, you are encouraged to do so. Security notes for these releases will be delayed for a further week to give time for administrators to update to the latest versions. As you know Moodle’s major releases now are every six months and progress on new features, enhancements and overhauls has been excellent since the new schedule was instituted. A tweak to the calendar now puts minor releases on a schedule with a more frequent regularity. We have decided to change the Release calendar to bring minor releases in-line with major releases, rather than keeping them offset by one month, which will achieve tighter security still.

You have to start somewhere, and the only way to learn is to do. 2. Before you start a new project you always need to have a plan in place. 3. If you run across something that you don’t understand, then find someone who does. Bulk course upload. Bulk course upload is a contributed code that creates a course with a teacher and basic course settings from a CSV file. There is also a bulk course deletion tool. These work in 1.8 and 1.9. Tips & Tricks To use this code successfully, the site administrator must create the teacher accounts before creating the courses.

The role for the teacher in the csv is the role short name. The bulk course delete tool uses a txt file with the course short names. Moodle has a unique constraint combining a course's category and its sortorder, in other words two courses in the same category shouldn't have the same sortorder.
