More » Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies Samuel L. "Sam" Becker died on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at the age of 89. Professor Becker, a UI alumnus, was a beloved figure for the University of Iowa, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Department of Communication Studies, and the countless students, faculty colleagues, staff members, and community members who were touched by his more than 70 years of scholarship, mentorship, and friendship at the UI.

Revista Electrónica Semestral de Estudios Semióticos de la Cultura 7 Mayo 2006 (ISSN 1696-7356) En esta comunicación deseo retomar e ilustrar comentarios que Iuri Lotman hizo en su importante trabajo Estructura del texto artístico. Estos comentarios tratan sobre la relación entre poesía y prosa, y aparecen en las primeras páginas del capítulo 6, «Elementos y niveles de la paradigmática del texto artístico» [1]. Las resumiré brevemente: Lotman señala lo ilusorio que es igualar el discurso común con la prosa literaria. Nos recuerda que, históricamente, la poesía precede a la prosa. Ataca a la crítica literaria descriptiva que observa meramente recursos literarios y afirma que una descripción estructural de la literatura considerará siempre el recurso, tal como la rima o la metáfora, en relación con el contexto de las convenciones de la literatura establecida.
Considero interesante aquí, como a menudo ocurre en la escritura de Lotman, que su comprensión excede el vocabulario teórico concreto que usa. XULdigital El Proyecto XUL: Signo viejo y nuevo, la revista argentina que dio origen a este proyecto de digitalización surgió a principios de 1980 como una práctica literaria y política en el entorno hostil de una dictadura militar que utilizó a la censura como un instrumento clave del terror de estado. La dictadura que había comenzado oficialmente en 1976 fue destituída por el retorno a la democracia en 1983. Siete años de terror y persecuciones habían dejado cerca de 30.000 desaparecidos, varios millones de exiliados internos y externos y tal desmantelamiento de las instituciones políticas y legislativas que era difícil imaginar que una comunidad civil pudiera recuperarse completamente de semejante terror y censura por el simple acto de un llamado a elecciones.
Sin embargo es esa misma dificultad la que pone en contexto el esfuerzo de reconstrucción de las instituciones políticas y culturales que tuvo lugar en la Argentina con el regreso a la democracia.
