The Evolution of Twitter Usage

Twitter’s user base has experienced infamous growth over the past couple years, with the company announcing in December that 100 million new accounts had been opened in 2010 and eMarketer estimating that the US Twitter population rose from 18 million in 2009 to 26 million last year. The social media service may also be beginning to mature as a community. According to research from Sysomos , users’ following habits have changed dramatically since 2009. That year, nearly two in five Twitter users around the world followed five people or fewer. By 2010 that group had been sliced nearly in half, indicating more participation among users. There was also a sharp difference in the proportion of accounts who were followed by five or fewer other users, dropping from 46% of the total in 2009 to 32% in 2010. http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1008148

Twitter ?

Twitter isn't very social: study | Econsultancy

When discussing the internet's social media revolution, you can count on Twitter being mentioned. While Twitter may not be structured like, say, Facebook, Twitter is commonly thought of as an online social network. But what if it really isn't much like a social network at all, and what if the media sharing on Twitter isn't very " social "? According to a study conducted by Yahoo Research, which looked at 260m tweets sent on Twitter between July 28, 2009 and March 8, 2010 containing bit.ly-shortened URLs, that seems to be the case.

50% of Tweets Consumed Come From Only 0.05% of Twitter Users [STUDY]

A mere 20,000 Twitter users steal almost half of the spotlight on Twitter , which now ropes in a billion tweets every week . That means only 0.05% of the social network’s user base attracts attention, according to a new Yahoo Research study titled, “ Who Says What to Whom on Twitter .” Of the 260 million tweets with URLs that the study’s authors analyzed, nearly 50% of the tweets consumed were created by what they called “elite” users who fall into four categories: media, celebrities, organizations and bloggers. “Ordinary” users encompass everyone else. http://mashable.com/2011/03/28/twitter-study-consumed/
http://thenextweb.com/twitter/2010/12/11/nearly-half-of-all-twitter-users-dont-read-a-word-you-say/ There has been a lot of talk circulating the Internet over the past few days about 8 percent of Americans being on Twitter. While that number is huge, in and of itself, what is more interesting is in how the Twitter community as a whole uses the service. Or maybe the right term here is doesn’t use the service.

Nearly half of all Twitter users don’t read a word you say.

According to weekly trend data from Experian Simmons DataStream SM , the number of U.S. adults paying a monthly visit to microblogging site Twitter.com has fallen during the past year by 14%. As of November 29, 2010, 8.25 million adults had made at least one visit to Twitter.com during the previous 30 days, down from 9.54 million adults who had visited the site in the 30 days prior to November 30, 2009. Does this mean the ultimate “fail whale” is lurking just over the horizon for Twitter? Not just yet. Among those who visit Twitter.com, Simmons DataStream shows that the average number of visits per month rose a relative 37% in the last year. Twitter.com visits in late November 2010, in fact, reached an average of 10.0 visits per month, up from just 7.3 visits per month the year prior.

How to Use Twitter to Find New Business «

For those that follow me, you know I talk about how Twitter is one of my best lead generators. Most people are either afraid or intimidated and there really is no reason to be. Understanding how your prospects are using Twitter and what personal data they are willing to share can boost its use for new business. Sysomos is the leading provider of social media monitoring and analytics technology. They have analyzed more than a billion tweets generated by over 20 million Twitter users in 2010. This included bio, website address and location information (both textual and lat / long) disclosed in their profile pages to see how many details Twitter users were divulging.
Interested in who tweets, why they do, what they share and how often they do it, BuySellAds created this rich infographic to show at-a-glance what the Twitter ecoystem has become since it launched in 2006. Did you know that the person most likely to use Twitter would be a female, hispanic, 20-something that attended college and lives in a city? Neither did we.

Who Says What to Whom on Twitter | Yahoo! Research

We study several longstanding questions in media communications research, in the context of the microblogging service Twitter, regarding the production, flow, and consumption of information. To do so, we exploit a recently introduced feature of Twitter known as “lists” to distinguish between elite users—by which we mean celebrities, bloggers, and representatives of media outlets and other formal organizations—and ordinary users. Based on this classification, we find a striking concentration of attention on Twitter, in that roughly 50% of URLs consumed are generated by just 20K elite users, where the media produces the most information, but celebrities are the most followed. We also find significant homophily within categories: celebrities listen to celebrities, while bloggers listen to bloggers etc; however, bloggers in general rebroadcast more information than the other categories.
In a blog post a week ago, I stated that Auto Direct Messages (Auto DMs) on Twitter are unwelcome . Many agreed that these preprogrammed messages sent to all new followers are annoying, but others vehemently disagreed. To bring clarity to the topic, we conducted a survey that was completed by 336 individuals.
