Experian Hitwise has released some new numbers about social network use around the world. It found that Brazil and Singapore are the top two countries for overall social networking use. But Facebook is not the network on which Brazilians are spending their time. The study also measured the length of the average user's Facebook session and found that Brazilians spent comparatively little time on Facebook. While Singapore users spend nearly nearly 39 minutes per Facebook session on average, Brazilian users spend less than half that, just over 18 minutes.

Google Plus Traffic Surges, Closes In on Myspace, Linkedin | Reuters

Experian Hitwise, a market research company, reports that the site’s market share in the social media world increased 1,269 percent last week. Yes, you read that correctly. Not 12. Not 69. Not even 269. 1,269 percent. Those 15 million visits to the site the week of Sep. 24 propelled Google Plus inside the top 10 of most popular social networking sites, a category dominated by Facebook with its nearly 1.8 billion visits last week. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/27/idUS361331041320110927

Breaking: People use social networks to connect with friends and family, not brands Brian Solis

http://www.briansolis.com/2011/09/breaking-people-use-social-networks-to-connect-with-friends-and-family-not-brands/ I have to be honest, the headline is a bit hypocritical. I spend most of my time helping businesses embrace the opportunity to understand customer needs and engage with them in ways that they appreciate and value. Contrary to popular belief however, everyday consumers aren’t flocking to social media to build relationships with their favorite brands or local businesses. The truth is that consumers are using the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, et al. to connect with friends and family.
Twitter leads the pack of the big three social networks in terms of traffic growth, as it has for the past two years, according to comScore data. Ranked number 34 in a top-50 list of websites based on U.S. traffic, Twitter's increase of 32% dwarfed Facebook's 11% growth. Meanwhile, the professional-oriented LinkedIn is suffering from stagnation—it saw 32.5 million visitors in July, down from 33-million-plus in both June and May. In fact, LinkedIn's dip and Twitter's leap saw the latter pass the former in traffic for the first time ever (Twitter had 32.8 million visits in July).

http://harpsocial.com/2011/04/social-medias-shocking-statistics/ With 500 Million + people on Facebook and an estimated 280,000,000 Twitter accounts, there is no doubt that social media is eye opening… shockingly so. The significance of social media for businesses is equally big. Expanding your brand’s potential reach via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more has become the holy grail of marketing. According to a recent Exact Target study, 69% of all Facebook users are a fan of one or more company Pages , leaving little room for argument that social media marketing can have significant impact on your business and ultimately, sales. In fact, a whopping 92% of marketers are already using Facebook today, according to a study from Social Media Examiner , with 75% of them planning on increasing their activity in the future. We’ve collected current social media statistics for platforms, users and businesses including the top four social platforms that businesses are successfully employing today (you’ll be surprised).

The Winners & Losers of Social Networking [INFOGRAPHIC]

http://mashable.com/2011/04/12/social-networks-infographic/ The course of social media never did run smooth — not for long, anyhow. And for some Web 2.0 companies, it’s running less smoothly than ever. Without question, Facebook is the network du jour; but even though the reigning champion’s user stats keep soaring, social networking as a whole might be leveling off. Nevertheless, scores of other highly competitive social sites keep waxing and waning; and different networks and apps are more popular in specific geographic areas, with certain genders or age groups and even among various social classes. For example, Plaxo is the network with the most users over the age of 65. Facebook is more popular with women, but Digg and Reddit tend to be more popular with men.
The last two quarters have seen some interesting trends in the big four Social Media services. The most obvious is the leveling off of growth of Facebook and Twitter, but of greatest interest is the clarification of who is using the Social Media tools. Despite the plateau reached during the last two quarters, Facebook gained 100 million unique visitors per month over the same time last year and now stands at 590 million unique visitors per month . Twitter is the runner-up at 97 million unique visitors. To put Facebook's Internet presence in perspective, the combined daily circulation of the Wall Street Journal, USAToday, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, the New York Daily News, and the New York Post equals only 36% of the average daily unique visitors (19 million) of Facebook. LinkedIn remains stagnant with no growth over the last five quarters and MySpace can claim the most significant trend as it continues its death spiral.
