The Danger of Overdoing SEO

During my first few years in the SEO field, half of the sites I'd visit - those my SEO brethren in the forums or over email owned - were what today we'd probably call "over-optimized." They tended to have features like: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-danger-of-overdoing-seo
Another great post from Jason Cohen popped onto my radar yesterday entitled " Startup Competitive Advantages that Work ." It's definitely worth a read, even if you're not at a startup. As a passionate (OK, maybe obsessed is the right word) startup guy and someone who loves SEO, I couldn't help but want to jump into the fray with some thoughts on how the field we're in - domination of the organic search results - can be an unfair, competitive advantage for businesses that know how to wield it. To summarize: Anything that can be copied will be copied, including features, marketing copy, and pricing.

Yup, SEO Can Be A Competitive Advantage

Why Your Business Must Be on the First Page of Google

I think this is a very generation thing. My parents say " look it up in the phone book" My generation says " look it up online" " Google search it" Subtext: It is the way of the future http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/3386/Why-Your-Business-Must-Be-on-the-First-Page-of-Google.aspx

Why Social Media Is a Better Investment than SEO

This guest post is by Gary Arndt of Everything-Everywhere.com As a blogger, you probably do not have the luxury of having a staff of people to work for you.
A comment by Laura Lippay replies that while old-school SEO was mainly concerned about making money from search; it is now related to two new things:

http://www.adventurista.com/2011/03/prediction-facebook-is-no-longer-viable.html Chris Dixon is causing (surprise surprise :) a bit of an uproar with his blog post " SEO is no longer a viable marketing strategy for startups ." Chris's post is overstated but what I agree with is that SEO is no longer viable as the primary marketing strategy for a startup .

How to be successful online without SEO bullshittery?

This is a hot topic near and dear to my heart. I create a site 4 years ago that I've been writing on every since... there are probably near 2000 articles on it. Everything from fixing your MTU settings on your Q1000 modem to Java framework tips I find handy to years worth of game and movies reviews to hilarious cat pictures.
