After a few emails back and forth about pricing he asked if he could charge more to customers who got to use the latest version of the software. Wow, I was taken aback as we’re talking about a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application where all customers should use the same version.

Software as a service ( SaaS , typically pronounced [sæs]), sometimes referred to as "on-demand software", is a software delivery model in which software and associated data are centrally hosted on the cloud . SaaS is typically accessed by users using a thin client via a web browser . SaaS has become a common delivery model for most business applications, including accounting , collaboration , customer relationship management (CRM), management information systems (MIS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), invoicing, human resource management (HRM), content management (CM) and service desk management. [ 1 ] SaaS has been incorporated into the strategy of all leading enterprise software companies. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] According to a Gartner Group estimate, [ 4 ] SaaS sales in 2010 reached $10 billion, and were projected to increase to $12.1bn in 2011, up 20.7% from 2010. Gartner Group estimates that SaaS revenue will be more than double its 2010 numbers by 2015 and reach a projected $21.3bn.
Le SaaS, Software as a Service, propose de consommer un logiciel sous la forme d'un service hébergé. Tarifées par abonnement, les solutions en mode SaaS couvrent les grands domaines fonctionnels : ERP, CRM, logistique, applications métier... SaaS (pour Software as a service) renvoie à un modèle de logiciel commercialisé non pas sous la forme d'un produit (en licence définitive), que le client installerait en interne sur ses serveurs, mais en tant qu'application accessible à distance comme un service, par le biais d'Internet et du Web. Tout comme l'ASP (Application Service Provider - ou fournisseur d'applications hébergées) ou les applications à la demande (ou On-Demand applications), le SaaS s'inscrit dans la famille des logiciels managés ou hébergés.

Le logiciel en tant que service ou en anglais le Software as a Service ( SaaS ) est un concept consistant à proposer un abonnement à un logiciel plutôt que l'achat d'une licence. Avec le développement des Technologies de l'information et de la communication , de plus en plus d'offres SaaS se font au travers du web. Il n'y a alors plus besoin d'installer une application de bureau , mais d'utiliser un programme client-serveur . Ce concept, apparu au début des années 2000, prend la suite de celui du fournisseur de service d'application (« application service provider » - ASP).

Sous ces lettres mystérieuses, qui évoque quelque service secret ou une célèbre station de montagne suisse , se cache un nouvel acronyme dont l’informatique est gourmande : « Software as a Service ». Mais SaaS est plus qu’une nouveauté et pourrait constituer cette « killer app » que l’industrie informatique attend et redoute, en l’occurrence une arme redoutable de destruction massive du tissu informatique traditionnel établi depuis plus de trente ans. Depuis qu’IBM, à l’aube de l’informaique moderne, a commencé à vendre séparément ses logiciels et ses machines s’est développé un marché très dynamique de la vente de logiciels à partir desquels entreprises et administrations, les plus gros consommateurs d’informatique, ont pu construire leurs propres applications.
