Read the case study about how Intel Xeon processors and VMware helped virtualize 12 business critical database applications . Two Microsoft researchers, Erik Meijer and Gavin Bierman, argue in a paper in the April issue of Communications that the growing number of non-relational databases (or more specifically, key/value databases) need a standardized data manipulation language like SQL in order to grow the market for NoSQL databases.

NOSQL Databases
It's a truism that we should choose the right tool for the job .

10 things you should know about NoSQL databases
Takeaway: The relational database model has prevailed for decades, but a new type of database — known as NoSQL — is gaining attention in the enterprise. Here’s an overview of its pros and cons. For a quarter of a century, the relational database (RDBMS) has been the dominant model for database management.NoSQL: Comparing the Different Solutions

I like this article: while it is for sure not the definitive guide to NoSQL, it is a short description mostly about facts that people new to the field can use to get an idea about what a good candidate could be for initial experimentation, given a defined problem to solve. That said I think that picking the good database is something you can do only with a lot of work. Picking good technologies for your project is hard work , so there is to try one, and another and so forth, and even reconsidering after a few years (or months?)

Christof Strauch, from Stuttgart Media University, has written an incredible 120+ page paper titled NoSQL Databases as an introduction and overview to NoSQL databases . The paper was written between 2010-06 and 2011-02, so it may be a bit out of date, but if you are looking to take in the NoSQL world in one big gulp, this is your chance.
