http://techcrunch.com/2011/12/27/android-ios-devices-xmas-day/ It was a very Android and iOS Christmas. Mobile apps research form Flurry released estimates on how many Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas day, as well as how many apps were downloaded. On a combined basis, 6.8 million devices were activated, up 353 percent from the 1.5 million average activations a day over the first 20 days of December. And that number from 2.8 million combined activations on Christmas, 2010, the previous record. Flurry doesn’t break out the split between iOS and Android. But you can triangulate the numbers with other publicly available stats.
According to new data from Nielsen, Android has continued to pick up steam in the United States, and retains its crown as the most-used smartphone OS during Q3 2011. Google’s mobile OS now accounts for 43% of U.S. smartphones, up from the 39% we saw back in July. Apple’s iOS, on the other hand, has remained lock-steady at 28% this whole time, putting it at a distant second. Despite their lack of growth on the software front, Apple still rules the roost when it comes to hardware. http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/03/android-still-most-popular-os-ios-holds-steady-in-second-place/

Android’s blistering growth, which doubled from 25.3 percent a year ago and is up from 43.4 percent in the second quarter, is coming at the cost of almost every other smartphone platform, including iOS. Overall, the smartphone market grew 42 percent year over year to 115 million smartphones sold in the third quarter. But with Android outpacing the market, other competitors are having a hard time keeping up.

http://www.theequitykicker.com/2011/11/01/blodgets-charts-history-of-battle-between-android-and-apple-says-apple-should-be-worried/ We are going through a phase of hardware replacement in our family at the moment. We have just bought our first Mac computer as a PC replacement (a Mac Mini ) and Fiona has got a new iPhone. I still use a Blackberry for email, but I carry an iPhone as well which is due for replacement. It seems like I’ve been waiting for a long time now for an Android device that matches up to the iPhone, and given that the 4S isn’t much of an advance I’m thinking I will probably go for the new Google Galaxy Nexus (hopefully available this month).
When you really boil it down, which apps that you've downloaded from the Android Market do you actually use? According to new numbers from Nielsen, outside of the Market itself, Facebook is the next used app across age groups on Android. Four out of every five people use Facebook for Android, outdistancing Google's own apps and just about every other app on the platform. That comes as no surprise. Facebook is the most popular app of all time, with 350 million people accessing the social network from mobile devices. Across the age demographics surveyed by Nielsen, Google properties took the next four spots. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/breaking_down_the_most_used_android_apps_by_age_de.php

Google executives tried to fend off concerns this afternoon that they’re still making all their money from cheap text ads running alongside the company’s search results and on its AdSense network. So during the conference call discussing third quarter earnings , they presented some numbers about Google’s “emerging” businesses. Chief financial officer Patrick Pichette emphasized that executives are only sharing these numbers once, to make a point about Google’s revenue sources. Here’s the data they shared: Google’s non-text display advertising has an “annualized run rate” of $2.5 billion, meaning that based on numbers from the last three months, the company is on-track to earn earn $2.5 billion per year. Android continues climb to the top

RIM continues to hold the top spot with 35.8% of the market, but Android is quickly chipping away at that lead. RIM’s market share is down 3.5 percentage points from July, when it accounted for 39.3% of the market. Apple’s iOS has risen less than one percentage point to take 24.6% of the market, compared to its share in July of 23.8% of the market.
A report that Android has achieved status as the number one smartphone platform in the world has been called into question. According to analyst firms Gartner and IDC , the numbers reported by competitor Canalys are inaccurate...at least for now. Despite 888.8% growth this year, Android did not displace Symbian in Q4 2010 as the world's top smartphone platform, both firms say. Instead, Gartner reports that Android overtook Symbian in unit sales, but Symbian is still slightly ahead in terms of market share. IDC also reported that Symbian is the "market leader" at present.
