http://windmillnetworking.com/2012/03/21/raising-your-content-curation-to-the-next-level-2/ As companies become media publishers as part of their social media marketing strategy, one topic that always confuses my clients is the topic of content curation, or sourcing information from 3rd party sources and then sharing them on your social media properties. Windmill Networking Content Marketing contributor Bob Geller wrote a great post yesterday on how content curation can help complement your content marketing and social media marketing efforts . If you’re still trying to get a grip on content curation, let me frame the topic the same way I do for my clients: The answer, of course, is in the art of curating content and sharing that information that is aligned with your content strategy, represents your brand, and would be of interest to the public you are trying to attract.

Is it really true that by aggregating many content sources and picking and republishing those news and stories that you deem great is really going to benefit you and your readers in the long run?

Unlike traditional online news publishers (newspapers, magazines, TV networks) and blogs, which primarily create original content, news curators focus on finding (or cultivating)the best content that is already published. There are three primary types of news curation sites, exemplified by Techmeme, Yahoo! News and The Huffington Post, each a leader in their category.

Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme. The work involves sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information. A content curator cherry picks the best content that is important and relevant to share with their community. It isn’t unlike what a museum curator does to produce an exhibition: They identify the theme, they provide the context, they decide which paintings to hang on the wall, how they should be annotated, and how they should be displayed for the public. Content curation is not about collecting links or being an information pack rat, it is more about putting them into a context with organization, annotation, and presentation. Content curators provide a customized, vetted selection of the best and most relevant resources on a very specific topic or theme. http://www.bethkanter.org/content-curation-101/

Example: The New York Times , Wall Street Journal , CNN and most mainstream media outlets today, who for years have been trusted arbiters to find the most important news and bring it to us in the way that they decide. New media examples: The Drudge Report , which has grown from one man's curation and sorting to a full team, and Techmeme , which was once almost completely algorithm driven, and now is staffed around the clock by savvy editors who pluck the best of the tech Web. Of course, it is easy for an individual to be a curator. I share a lot of content, manually, through @lgstream on Twitter , as well as on Google Buzz , FriendFeed and Facebook . http://blog.louisgray.com/2010/08/five-stages-of-filtering-relevance-and.html

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_to_manage_your_news_consumption_in_the_real-time_web.php Is the Real-Time Web making news consumption better or worse? In a Wired magazine article , book author Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet is reducing our ability to comprehend content on the Web. In a separate blog post , Carr even suggests that websites and blogs should move hyperlinks from the body of an article to the bottom - apparently, links distract readers and cause them to understand an article less.

http://www.clickz.com/clickz/column/2104954/content-curation-king Sean Carton | August 29, 2011 "Curation" is a buzzword (even if it isn't technically a word…unless you count the 14th century French definition meaning "to cure") that's smokin' up the interwebs these days. Launching into the blogosphere virtually from nowhere in 2009, it's now one of those terms that's essential to any digital marketer on the cutting edge (or for anyone who wants to sound like one). Curation has now come to mean the act of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a coherent way, organized around a specific topic(s). However, unlike automated services (such as Google News), the essential difference of curation is that there's a human being doing the sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing.

A few posts ago, I talked about ‘ Acceptable Ads ‘ from networks like The DECK , Fusion Ads , Carbon Ads , InfluAds , Yoggrt , and Ad Packs by BuySellAds. I argued that these networks are working to become curators of content, not just broadcasters of the highest bidder, and as a result, the products they advertise get additional value out of just being picked to be featured in the ads. Field Notes is another brand owned by Coudal Partners, the company behind The DECK, and they recently created a banner ad that caught my eye: As you can see, there’s no call to action, no product shot and no sales pitch. Instead, there’s just a colored box, a product name and the fact that they ‘made a red one’. If you aren’t already familiar with Field Notes, or aren’t the world’s biggest fan of the color red, you might look right past this ad without a second thought.

The Network Matters | The Future of Ads

No that long ago, blog writers were the primary curators of content online, and we’d all tune in to see what they’d recommend next. Ads would try to place themselves next to premium content on premium channels, but the connection was loose at best, and readers knew the ads were paying for the placement , so they would still get ignored. However, as companies realized there was value in being the source of new, interesting and unique content, curation became a viable marketing tactic . Through Twitter, Facebook, and other curation channels, companies would find and share content related to their own products in hopes of attracting the sustained interest of their target market. Over time, as trust shifted and consumers were more willing to look outside of the traditional sources for new content, additional verticals started to adapt to this trend, including ad networks and daily deal sites.

A Shift To Curation | The Future of Ads

Curation has always been an underrated form of creation. The Getty Center in Los Angeles is one of the most frequently visited museums in America – and started as a private art collection from one man (J. Paul Getty) who had a passion for art. Aside from a few well known examples like this one, however, the term curation has rarely been used outside of the world of art … until now.

The 5 Models Of Content Curation

Image Courtesy of Noupe Design Content Curation is rapidly becoming one of the buzzwords du jour, as we all drown in a sea of content coming at us from every direction, through multiple devices and on a 24/7/365 always on timeline. What is content curation? My definition may be somewhat abridged from industry pundits – here goes: “organizing and sharing the most relevant content on a finite subject.” Why is content curation important to your brand or business? Simple answer – if you want to connect with your potential customers and market segment your content has to be relevant, concise and “speak to your market” in a meaningful way.
