Making Your Presentation Worth the Cost

Let’s face it, no matter what your business is, or who you work for, the chances are that you’ve been on the receiving end of bad presentations. My working definition of a bad presentation here is one that costs more than it saves or makes for the organization involved. If it’s a business presentation, that’s obviously the company employing whoever the presentation involves – there’s always (almost always) someone who’s responsible. http://www.lifehack.org/articles/communication/making-your-presentation-worth-the-cost.html

In Presentations, Kill Your Darlings - Jerry Weissman - Harvard Business Review

http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2011/08/in_presentations_kill_your_dar.html Historian Amanda Foreman, author of the bestselling Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire , has written a new book, A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War . In an article for the Wall Street Journal 's "Word Craft" column about her creative process, Foreman provided a valuable lesson for presenters: The fruit of my 11 years of research meant that I had more than 400 characters scattered over four regions ... This vast mass of material was so unwieldy that I could hardly work my way through the first day of the conflict, let alone all four years. While few presenters spend 11 years developing their stories about their businesses, they, like Foreman, have a vast mass of unwieldy material that they have to communicate to various audiences.

Animate Your Audience – Not Your Slides « Phil Presents

https://philpresents.wordpress.com/2011/09/06/animate-your-audience-not-your-slides/ Last week’s post about why I don’t recommend Prezi got a lot of people talking, and the consensus seems to be that even if you do find some uses for Prezi, the use of excessive animation is at best distracting and counterproductive, and at worst actually nauseating for the audience. Animation should only be used when it helps the audience to understand a point – i.e. the movement or effect should be meaningful. Text does not need to fly in from all parts of the screen – it can just appear, or fade in, at the right time.

10 Key Elements of a Persuasive Presentation

If you are growing and advancing your life, there will be times when you need to give a presentation. A presentation is not limited to the times you stand in front of a group of people. It also includes conference call presentations, conference room presentations, one-on-one presentations, and even written presentations. One of the ways to stand out among your peers and competitors and increase your value to the market is to learn how to prepare and deliver effective presentations. I am one of those people who loves giving speeches and presentations. From what I have heard, I’m in a minority. Many people dislike giving speeches, but I’ve always had a hard time understanding that. My delight in giving talks is probably tied up with my love of theatre, my desire to be the center of attention (although I am actually an introvert), and my need for approval (and hence applause). People often tell me that I’m a great presenter, or that they loved my talk, or that my talk was the best one at the conference etc etc. so my love for speaking seems to work. But in all honesty, I’m never quite satisfied with the talks I give.
