Initially I thought this was just a decoration.

WARNING: this only makes a little bit harder to hijack user session, our solution basically have nothing to do with session security!! Logout user if HTTP_USER_AGENT and IP differs from the one saved in session. This make it harder to successfully use session hijacking tools like firesheep . Also, usage of browser_fingerprint.js allows usage of pseudo-unique fingerprint of users browser details. Both combined makes much harder (at least for script kiddies using firesheep for evil purposes) to hijack session (yeah, right). middleware checks, if USER_AGENT didn't change. http://agilewebdevelopment.com/plugins/session_protector

Make gnome-terminal profiles work for you

The gnome-terminal is one of the finest terminals available for the Linux operating system. It’s rock-solid, does it’s job, and has a ton of features you might not find in other terminal emulators. One of those features is the Profile. A profile is a way to have multiple terminal configurations at once.

It doesn't matter if you call it a boom or a bubble. The startup business moves in cycles, and what goes up will eventually come down. We're in summer. One easy way to tell: notice all the startup experts and prophets that have sprung up in the last two years (myself included). Notice how many of them made their money during a previous boom. http://www.startuplessonslearned.com/2011/08/winter-is-coming.html

Lessons Learned: Winter is coming

There’s no shortage of Google+ in the air these days. Overeager pundits and soothsayers are hoping to be among the most visible voices on the net saying which service or company it’s going to topple, why it’s going to fail or succeed, and why it should or shouldn’t be more like this or that. It all seems awfully premature, considering Google+ is just getting started, and I don’t mean in user numbers. We’re all familiar enough with Google products to know that practically everything they’ve ever done was launched early and incomplete, whether it went on to succeed (Gmail, Android) or not (Orkut, Wave). Most if not all of the big talk surrounding the network right now will have to be adjusted in a month, six months, and a year from now. http://techcrunch.com/2011/07/15/google-one-hell-of-a-trojan-horse/

Parsing dates and times in Ruby and Rails (Build 20100722155716)

http://everydayrails.com/2010/08/11/ruby-date-time-parsing-chronic.html > require 'rubygems' => true > require 'chronic' => true > Chronic :: parse ( 'tomorrow' ) => Thu Aug 12 12 : 00 : 00 - 0500 2010 > Chronic :: parse ( 'next saturday' ) => Sat Aug 14 12 : 00 : 00 - 0500 2010 > Chronic :: parse ( '8/12/10 3pm' ) => Thu Aug 12 15 : 00 : 00 - 0500 2010 So rather than requiring users to use Rails’ default pulldown-based date picker, or enter data in forced formats (like MM/DD/YYYY ), or click through Javascript-based calendars, your app can be smart about parsing the entered date into something meaningful to the server. For that matter, you can use it in conjunction with a Javascript calendar (like the datepicker in JQuery UI ) for further functionality. Chronic Duration Say you’re developing a cooking site or project management tool and want to allow users to enter spans of time like “35 minutes,” “1 hour 15 minutes,” “1:30,” or “2 days” and store them in a consistent format.

Whenever you accomplish something, you don’t get a gold star, or a raise or congratulations, you get to survive to the next stage. As with all visionary customers, we ask not why aren’t there more of you, but what is wrong with you? Entrepreneurship is awesome. The magic thing we call software is disruptive, but it creates opportunity. However, entrepreneurship is not the best way to make money.

The Online Anatomy of a Spreading Story

Last night, U.S. forces killed “ the most wanted face of terrorism ,” Osama bin Laden. However, this is not a political blog post or a commentary on the event. Instead, it is an examination of how technology has drastically changed the word-of-mouth spread of information. Traditional media, TV and print newspapers, couldn’t keep up with the story as fast as new, social media could draw the evolving picture. http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/12989/The-Online-Anatomy-of-a-Spreading-Story.aspx
Well, it's taken me a week to think through all the ramifications of this and put it into a blog post, but last week was the best ever for Shoes of Prey by a large order of magnitude, and it's all thanks to this video by a 16 year old YouTuber, Juicystar07 aka Blair Fowler. Yes, that video has had over 450,000 views and more than 90,000 comments, each of which is a potential customer who has visited our site, designed a pair of shoes, then written a description of those shoes and what event they would wear it to - talk about brand engagement! The video was the 5th most viewed on YouTube worldwide last Wednesday and the most commented on video worldwide for the day. It was the 58th most viewed video and 2nd most discussed video worldwide last week! Our Google Analytics traffic graph is my new favourite image of all time: http://www.22michaels.com/2010/03/juicystar07-and-world-of-new-media.html

22 Michaels: The incredible power of a 16 year old video blogger

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! We thought we'd experiment using Facebook to target male friends of our Shoes of Prey fans with a Valentine's Day ad, to see if we could encourage purchases of Shoes of Prey gift certificates for Valentine's Day. Unfortunately the campaign didn't work at all, our ads simply weren't clicked on and I'd love to hear your thoughts as to why. To the left is the ad we used.

22 Michaels: Why didn't our Valentine's Day Facebook campaign work?

I was chatting to my mate Tom Davies who's recently launched a bike website Chappelli Cycles . They do single speed fixed gear bicycles which are very popular at the moment. The plan for their business is to do custom bicycles but to keep things simple and test the market they launched their site with 3 designs. And one month after launching sales have beat their expectations and they've already sold out of one model. Their conversion rate (the number of people who purchase as a percentage of people who visit the site) is fantastic.

By Sheldon Levine - Monday, May 2nd, 2011 at 11:23 am ShareThis Unless you have been totally disconnected from any sort of news over the past 12 hours, you’ve no doubt heard that Osama Bin Laden has been found and killed. Barack Obama, President of the United States, made the announcement late last night, but wasn’t the first one to break the story to a lot of people. Most people who are active on Twitter (and who weren’t asleep at the time) first heard the news through the popular social network where it spread like wildfire. I first saw tweets about Bin Laden’s death start sometime around 10:30pm(EST).

Today I’ll be speaking at ad:tech San Francisco with one of my favorite people in the Search Marketing industry, Melanie Mitchell , who is a Senior VP of Search Strategy at Digitas. She’s tasked a panel including Simon Heseltine , Rob Snell and myself to talk about “Modern Search Engine Optimization”. While SEO is a billion dollar industry, many companies focused on advertising are quite new to how SEO might fit within an online marketing strategy. With plenty of outdated and mis-information online amidst a fast changing industry, it can be a challenge to have confidence in what’s true and best practices.
