Millions of Americans see Arizona's decision to have local police officers begin enforcing immigration law. as the last thing that this nation needs. The act of singling out people on a border with a Hispanic country and somehow managing to do this without racial profiling, is viewed as a cruel fantasy by people of color in Arizona who wish to maintain a degree of privacy and dignity.

Few are surprised that these are the politics of a state where on some days, there are more police cars on the freeway than civilian cars. And from this position it becomes the first state to authorize police to investigate federal immigration issues. On the morning of July 3, 2009, a national holiday, Sarah Palin placed a call to her communications director and told her that she wanted to hold a press conference at her Wasilla, Alaska, home. She wouldn’t disclose the topic. For Palin, the months since Election Day had been a letdown even bigger than the loss to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Being governor was drudgery. “Her life was terrible,” one adviser says. And, whatever one thinks of her intelligence, she was more than shrewd enough to see that there was money to be made on her newfound national profile, and she hadn’t been the one making it—this was her particular American resentment.

From the time of her infamous wardrobe selection, money had been an issue in Palin’s politics. Palin knew there were ways to solve her money problems, and then some. On Friday morning, July 3, Palin called her cameraman to her house in Wasilla and asked him to be on hand to record a prepared speech. The numbers are staggering. Obama Sides Against America. RUSH: Where are we? We have a federal government that refuses to enforce federal immigration law and a state that is. AZ bill could send immigrants to NM. Immigration Decision Endangers Climate Change Bill. The decision by Arizona's Gov. Jan Brewer to sign a tough immigration bill for her state has endangered unrelated, but highly anticipated, climate change legislation, which has now been put on hold by its sponsors on Capitol Hill. Sen. Lindsey Graham, the lead Republican sponsor of the climate bill, sent a letter Saturday to supporters of the measure threatening to abandon the effort without assurances from President Obama that climate change, and not immigration reform, will be his highest legislative priority.

Following Graham's announcement, the bill's Democratic sponsor, Sen. John Kerry, said that he and Sen. Joe Lieberman would delay introducing the bill, which they had planned to do with Graham Monday. Without a Republican publicly supporting their effort, the bill's chances of success would be damaged immeasurably.

"We all believe that this year is our best and perhaps last chance for Congress to pass a comprehensive approach," Kerry said in a statement. Rep. Bart Motes: Arizona's Immigration Law is Racist (I Hope) When Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1070 into law, I hope that she and the legislators who passed it were motivated purely by absolutely venomous racism. Either: (a) The design is to target brown skinned people who either don't speak English or speak English with an accent, i.e., pure racial profiling, or (b) by the ruse of combating illegal immigration, it gives Arizona police the ability to warrantlessly arrest any resident of Arizona.

The only hope for the people of Arizona is that their police are the world's most vicious racists. On Friday, he sent President Obama a letter calling on him to exercise his “authority to limit [federal] cooperation with Arizona officials in their enforcement” of the law that makes it a crime in Arizona to be in the country illegally. Grijalva had to close his Arizona office on Friday after receiving death threats over his opposition to the new immigration law. The tough new Arizona law, will require local police officers to question people about their immigration status, it they suspect they are there illegally.
