Blog | Karen Barbé | Textileria: Nani Marquina: “La artesanía nos ha permitido innovar” Last Monday we welcomed Nani Marquina at UC School of Design (Santiago, Chile). We were lucky to enjoy breakfast with her and listen to her talking about the important role that crafts have played in the development and huge success of her rugs. Here I'm posting some of the images of her presentation in case you missed it. When she started her company, her rugs were woven in industrial looms which left little space for design possibilities other than changing motifs and colours. Rugs continued to be a flat wool surface, a sort of screen where different scenes where projected.

In 1993 Nani and her team discovered crafts and moved their production to India. Craftwork is not subject to technical restrictions. Nani Marquina has reinvented rugs through craftwork. For those interested, the techniques used in the production of Nani Marquina rugs are: · Hand-knotted · Hand-tufted · Hand-loomed · Kilim · Soumak · Dhurrie · Hand-sewn.
