One often gets a sense that it’s unjust, or at least contrived, particularly when the standard feels disappointing, or the faces as glossy and uninteresting as magazine models. This year’s 25th anniversary show is satisfying, not least because the portraits have clearly been chosen sensitively, with a compelling sense of narrative – no doubt the novelist’s influence, in panellist Joanna Trollope.
