I remember hearing that the books implied this, but I don't know if it's supposed to be canon in either the books or the movies. Some games clearly take place after other ones. It's been explicitly stated by Miyamoto and Aonuma that there is a timeline, and with evidence in almost all of the games to back that up, I don't see why we should think otherwise. Obviously some games take place before and after others— and with those, it actually makes sense.
