Analyze your own Twitter archive. We all love Twitter - Opinie.

I started collecting ReTweets a few weeks ago and have collected just over 84,000. I’m working on a system that will allow for mapping and analysis of ReTweet streams (sneak peak below), but in building that, I’ve already uncovered some interesting data. Contrary to what I initially thought, “RT” is used more than 4 times more often than the full word “retweet”. ReTweets occur at an average rate of around 258 per hour, and show a distinct increase during the work day and early evening. Retweets contain the word please over 5 times more often than most tweets. Retweets are generally longer than other tweets. Almost 70% of ReTweets contain a link. Tinyurl is overwhelmingly preferred as the URL shortener to use in ReTweets. Let me know what other data points you’d like to see and I’ll see what I can do. And here’s a very simple, very rough preview of the mapping tool: Gist: 7594 — GitHub. Untitled. Mashable has more influence than CNN on Twitter.

I just caught news of this report by Alex Leavitt, Evan Burchard, David Fowler and Sam Gilbert via Chris Brogan (@chrisbrogan) on Twitter. Recently the researches involved with the report, using a new methodology, examined 134,000 tweets, 15,866,629 followers and 899,733 followees, and in response to the 2,143 tweets generated by 12 specific users on Twitter over a ten-day period. They also collected 90,130 responses published by other users. The summary of their findings are: mashable is more influential than CNN. sockington is more influential than MCHammer, while MCHammer is more influential than three major social media analysts (garyvee, Scobleizer, andchrisbrogan). Celebrities with higher follower totals (eg., THE_REAL_SHAQ and ijustine) foster more conversation than provide retweetable content.

News outlets, regardless of follower count, influence large amounts of followers to republish their content to other users You can download the complete report in PDF format here. One of the themes coming through loud and clear in the twitterverse is that many of us are a bit jaded about blogging. Marshall Kirkpatrick wants to Twitter instead of blogging. The move onto the next bright and shiny thing is partly a result of our ADD and caffeine over-consumption, but its also a facet of attention management and our attempt to keep everything together.

Twitter offers a different, more conversational, mode of discourse from blogging, its not like choosing one email client over another. . I long ago came to the conclusion its impossible to truly engage with more than 200 bloggers. That, after all, is the size of a village, and the natural limit to our legacy brains, unaccustomed as they are to the I/O requirements of the utterly connected age. “The Power of Small Teams: Gore tries to keep its teams small (and caps even its manufacturing plants at 200 people). Twitter scares me.

For all its popularity, I see at least three issues: 1) it's a near-perfect example of the psychological principle of intermittent variable reward, the key addictive element of slot machines. 2) The strong "feeling of connectedness" Twitterers get can trick the brain into thinking its having a meaningful social interaction, while another (ancient) part of the brain "knows" something crucial to human survival is missing. 3) Twitter is yet another--potentially more dramatic--contribution to the problems of always-on multi-tasking... you can't be Twittering (or emailing or chatting, of course) and simultaneously be in deep thought and/or a flow state.

[Disclaimer: I'm SO in the minority on this one... it looks like about a hundred-to-one in favor of Twitter, so I'm most likely way wrong on this one (but it doesn't stop me from trying). Dr. A Sit Down With Twitter Co-Founder Ev Williams. Today the Guardian.co.uk posted an article about twitter . Jemima Kiss met with Mr. Williams in London and they talk about the twitter service, where it is, what it is for and where it is going. Mr. Williams still can't get his mother to use twitter but there are 350,000 other users happily using the service it appears. One of the interesting tidbits is this quote: "Rather than attach advertising to a personal communication channel," says Williams, "we want to make it a benefit so that there are people or entities you want to follow. Quite counter-startup thinking I would say but I guess you can afford to work on the business model later if you have a lot of users, money in the bank and investors that believe in you.
