Before and after: modern kitchen redo. Like most people who live with a rental kitchen, I dream of what I would actually do if I could replace cabinets and move things around.
(My dreams are filled with black painted cabinets and sailboat hardware, à la Nate Berkus’ old kitchen.) In her Philadelphia kitchen, wedding and interior designer Claire King wanted to bring a light, modern feel to her 50-year-old home. She also wanted to create an open flow between the dining room and kitchen. I love the bright and airy result. One of my favorite features is the bookcase at the end of the island. Sneak peek: best of backsplashes. My own kitchen backsplash is an ugly brown tile that looks like something left over from the 1970s.
I do my best to cover it up with my cutting boards and try to forget it’s there. I’ve always dreamed of a simple kitchen with a little extra kick in the backsplash area (growing up, my mother displayed tiles she collected from her travels behind our kitchen sink). Just this fall, after fours years in the South, they moved their home base back to Brooklyn, and Annie is now also the artist-in-residence at Brooklyn’s Textile Arts Center. (We peeked into the couple’s Southern home last year.) A perk of working in education is the summer breaks, and even though the couple keeps most of their time occupied with their work for Coggan and Crawford Architects, they decided to make the most of their summer and move operations up to Belfast, Maine.
They bought the house four years ago, and it’s taken three years to renovate. This summer was the first that they didn’t share morning coffee with their contractor, Darren. It’s been a busy week with a trip to Seattle for the Picasso exhibition and a drive out to the coast but I knew I had to share this amazing remodel with you before the week came to a close. Everyone loves good makeovers and the ones involving tiny spaces, creative design and ingenious solutions are my all time favorites! Check out how Seattle artist, designer and welder, Michelle de la Vega, created this beautiful little 250 sq. ft. haven… The before… This lonely little detached garage is just begging for some love. The after! A cozy, light filled sleeping loft is so perfect for the space. The kitchen is well organized and accessible with open storage solutions. The rustic wood burning stove becomes sculptural in this room along with Michelle’s own art installations.
