The bridge, located in Sneek in the Netherlands, is the first wooden bridge in the world that can support the heaviest load class of 60 tons. An official opening ceremony and celebration is planned for April 15, 2009. Spanning 105 feet and rising more than 50 feet in the air, the structure will serve as a grand entrance to the city of Sneek. The €3.5 million bridge was commissioned after a 2005 design competition, and is designed by OAK Architects (a collaboration between Achterbosch Architectuur and Onix architects) and constructed by German firm Schaffitzel Holzindustrie.

Scarpetta Dining Pavilion by gh3 and II BY IV Design. II BY IV Design and gh3 have designed a dining pavilion for the Scarpetta restaurant in Toronto, Canada.

Scarpetta Dining Pavilion by gh3 and II BY IV Design

With the iconic CN Tower soaring above and indicating its excellent location within the city, the restaurant pavilion is located within an outdoor green space framed by The Thompson Hotel, residences and a public park. Set within a black geometric pergola (designed by partnering firm gh3) that defines the lounge area both vertically and horizontally, II BY IV Design created a dining space with clean lines that would complement the angularity of the pavilion while fulfilling the client’s objective for a cool, different, ‘place to be seen’. Guests can enjoy full bar service and meals from a menu uniquely designed for the Pavilion by the first international expansion of famed New York restaurant Scarpetta. Design challenges included a tight schedule and a directive to work with a previously planned landscaped which allotted only a long narrow space for the dining extension.

The 70 m long bridge has a traffic lane in each direction contained within wide footpaths to either side. Connecting the recently rehabilitated Port district with its housing, amenities, offices and Imprimerie Nationale workshops as well as Avenue Anatole France to the town centre, the bridge is an essential element in guaranteeing the success of this new district which, until now, has been cut off from the city due to its location between the railway lines and the River Seine.
