Reefkeeping Magazine - January 2016 Tank of the Month. Fauna Marin Presents: Nicola's super colored 32gal SPS tank.
Article. Cleaner wrasses are vitally important to the health of reef fish. The five species of cleaner wrasses of the genus Labroides are truly an interesting group of fish.
While not a unique behavior in the underwater world, their pathogenic cleaning service is quite remarkable. These small, busy fish set up ‘stations’ in a part of the reef, in which a pair or harem diligently clean parasites, dead and damaged scales, and mucus from bony fishes, sharks, and sea turtles that present themselves for cleaning. A number of scientific studies and research attest to the important role these fish play in the health of the reefs. The overall health, size, and even diversity of fishes is greater in the reefs where cleaner wrasses are found versus those without their services. AQUASCAPING...What are the best ways to hold it together? Guardians of the Acropora. There are two genera of Guard Crabs commonly found in the aquarium trade – Trapezia and Tetralia – that are symbiotic on small polyp stony corals such as Acropora, Pocillopora, Stylophora, and Seriatopora corals.
Trapezia crabs can measure up to 1-3/4″ from elbow to elbow. They are also “equal handed,” having same-sized chelipeds (claws). Trapezia crabs are symbionts on Pocilloporid corals. Trapezia cymodoce, Trapezia septata, and the beautiful, red-spotted Trapezia rufopunctata host on Pocillopora corals, while the brown-clawed white Trapezia guttatus hosts on Seriatopora Birdsnest corals. These crabs are perfectly camouflaged to their host coral. The tiny Acropora Crabs of the genus Tetralia rarely measure more than 3/4″ and have one claw that is larger than the other.
Destination Tokyo, the final frontier. In all the years as a fish writer, nothing has been more rewarding to me than travelling the world and seeing new things.
The relationships that i’ve forged with people throughout my time is something that can never be taken away, and when life gets tough, and the world becomes bleak, these memories serve as a constant reminder of happier times. My profound interest in reef fish and the natural world has, to my greatest appreciation, opened the door to new sights and sounds.
It is therefore only befitting that we finish our Japanese travelogue in Tokyo, one of my favourite, and greatest cities that i’ve ever been to. Gonioplectrus hispanus, The Spanish Flag. Photo credit: Lemon TYK. An introduction to coral crabs, good and bad. There is surprisingly little information specifically about coral crabs in aquaria.
Every now and then some hitchhikers arrive on our aquacultured and wild corals and we are able to gain a bit more insight into the life of coral crabs. Some crabs like the pale face Tetralia cinctipes can be beneficial to our SPS corals while others like the Gorilla crab can irritate coral and even try take a nip at our fish as they get bigger. How to grow the most colorul SPS corals. During the course of history men have always searched for the unobtainable.
The knights of King Arthur searched for the Holy Grail, Captain Ahab obsessed about a white whale, in similar fashion we hobbyists have been searching for how to optimize the coloration in our sps corals and especially Acroporas, since the hobby started. For the most part I am pretty happy with the coloration of my corals, like everyone else I also want to make sure that I am doing everything I can to maximize their coloration, after all the wonderful colors of our corals is what now makes so many of them expensive. How to feed a coral reef tank. We can sometimes forget that corals are living animals which have a mouth and digestive system, and they therefore need to eat.
While the first step in keeping corals alive and healthy is a properly lit and flowed tank and placing the coral in the correct habitat conditions, feeding corals is a great way to keep the corals in our home aquarium happy and growing. There are plenty of corals to take care at Unique Corals, California All corals eat, that’s why each coral polyp has a mouth, and although there are a few exceptions to the rule like soft corals and xenia which are able to absorb dissolved organic compounds from the water, all your stony corals will be happier when they are fed. The mouth sizes for each polyp is relative to the body size of the polyp and this size will more or less determine the particle size a coral can eat. We have found that even the smallest of SPS polyps, even Anacropora will accept food.
