Ik ken studenten journalistiek (ja: HBO’ers) die al jaren zoeken naar een baan. Ook voor hen telt stage (die ze vaak pas konden lopen na maanden op een wachtlijst te hebben gestaan) niet mee.
Om maar te zwijgen van de InHolland Journalistiek mensen of de Media en Entertainment management afgestudeerden die nu de dupe zijn van alle slechte publiciteit rond hun hogeschool. Als deze dame -zoals gezegd- van kinds af aan al journalist wilde worden, waarom is ze dan niet eerder begonnen met vrijwilligerswerk bij de lokale krant/ omroep om zo ervaring op te bouwen? Met zeuren kom je er niet hoor! Er is iets vreemds aan de hand met het debat over de toekomst van de journalistiek. Het gaat namelijk letterlijk helemaal nergens over. Dat is het best uit te leggen aan de hand van de gestelde diagnose en het voorgeschreven medicijn in de oratie van Jo Bardoel, hoogleraar Journalistiek en Media aan de Radboud Universiteit. Dat luidt namelijk: de journalistiek moet zich beter profileren en verkopen. Waar hebben we het over? Bardoel raakt dan ook verstrikt in zijn tegenstrijdige aanbeveling om de journalistiek beter te profileren maar tegelijkertijd open te houden – zoals ook Mark Deuze en Henk Blanken opmerken.

Since the mid 1990s I’ve been experimenting with serial narratives, stories of more than one serving, in which parts or episodes often end in cliffhangers, driving the reader or viewer to the next installment. Verhagen nam de eer glunderend in ontvangst en werd vervolgens opmerkelijk welwillend geïnterviewd, zozeer zelfs dat ik, als trouwe fan van de twee presentatoren, mijn verbijstering in het rond twitterde: wat is er met die jongens aan de hand?

As we pointed out before Christmas over five months all he had to do was buy and download his book to his Kindle 173 times. He has also written 42 customer reviews that he voted on one hundred and eight times to raise the ranking on Amazon's bestseller list and recommendation lists. However it seems that Amazon reads TechEye and decided that having Hertog's book on its lists was a little embarrassing. Hertog wondered if Amazon has a double-standard or feared the truth about its best seller rankings getting out. In previous posts, I have argued that, at this stage, the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which Facebook has succeeded in exposing users to more (potential, if not probable) attention from companies marketing commodities or services than they probably anticipated, have no more than financial or economic objectives, but that the potential for extensive social control or psychological manipulation is vast. Moreover, just as, in the panoptical prison, where inmates monitor their own behaviour (on the assumption of their constant surveillance by warders with full visual access to them), indications are that individuals are increasingly engaging in a form of “normalising” self-monitoring of behaviour via voluntary self-exposure on internet sites such as Facebook.

For Lakoff, language is not a neutral system of communication, because it is always based on frames, conceptual metaphors, narratives, and emotions. Political thought and language is inherently moral and emotional. The basic phrases journalists use every day—words like “liberty” “freedom” “immigrant” “taxes”— are essentially contested concepts that have radically different meanings for different Americans. Lakoff came up with a widely influential framework for understanding American politics, contrasting the “strict father” morality of conservatives with the “nurturant parent” morality of liberals. Buytendijklezing 2011. University funding is set to become more political. The countdown to the London Olympics is under way – the diminishing days constantly circling the Post Office Tower in flickering lights (and probably being counted down in lots of other places across the capital). Just a few weeks after the – no doubt spectacular – closing ceremony, universities and colleges will be charging students much higher fees covering a large part of, all or even more than the cost of their higher education.
But no one will be celebrating. The comparison with the Olympic Games highlights just how short a time institutions have to set fee levels, publicise their fees, determine any discounts, establish bursaries and scholarships and, finally, create systems to manage the whole package. But first the government has to take some key decisions about the rules, and publish a white paper. Until it does so, higher education can do little but prepare speculative scenarios.
Twenty months – and counting down. Many things are unresolved. Het academische klimaat wordt uitgehold. Gisteren kondigde het College van Bestuur (CvB) in de vergadering met de Universitaire Studentenraad en de Ondernemingsraad aan dat het zich beraadt op herziening van FONDS. Dat is een spaarpotje dat vanaf volgend jaar de bestuursmaanden vervangt en ook open staat voor studenten die wegens andere redenen dan bestuurswerk vertraging oplopen. Aangezien er fors meer studenten aanspraak maakten werden de vergoedingen enigszins versoberd. Een student die in een jaar de maximale vergoeding krijgt, zal vanaf volgend jaar rond de 960 euro minder op zijn spaarrekening zien verschijnen. Volgens Jurgen Brink, mede-ontwerper van die plannen, was de belangrijkste reden dat het draagvlak voor langstuderen in de maatschappij afneemt. Na één jaar, nog voordat het FONDS daadwerkelijk is ingevoerd, stelt het CvB nu alweer dat de vergoedingen mogelijk kaler moeten worden.
De Radboud Universiteit en Nijmeegse studenten mogen trots zijn op het academische klimaat. Maak bewakers BOA' Huh? Alweer tentamenfraude op HBO? Raarrrrr! Nou ja zeg! Mogen wij even vermanend met het wijsvingertje wapperen en een welgemeend "tsssssk! " laten horen? Want wat we nu toch binnenkrijgen via de geheime linktips, dat hadden wij dus nooit verwacht. En dan verwachten wij doorgaans heel veel, kun je nagaan. Uit een gelekt intranetmailtje blijkt dat er niet alleen op HBO InHolland wordt gefraudeerd met tentamens maar ook op andere hogescholen (!!!). Nee, dat verwacht je niet. Zo hebben onlangs binnen "het instituut bedrijfseconomie" van de Hogeschool Utrecht "een aantal studenten" een tentamen zitten maken waarvan ze de vragen van te voren al hadden ingezien omdat de vragen uit een docentenkamer waren gejat en op het schoolplein doorverkocht.
Tot onze grote spijt hebben we geconstateerd dat er binnen het instituut bedrijfseconomie tentamenfraude is gepleegd. Het gaat in eerste instantie om vijf tentamens waarvan zeker is dat ze zijn verspreid, een aantal andere tentamens zijn nog in onderzoek. De NVJ en het Nederlands Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren hebben minister Rosenthal van Buitenlandse Zaken in een brief dringend verzocht alles in het werk te stellen om de veiligheid van Nederlandse journalisten in Egypte te garanderen en desnoods te bevorderen dat zij een vrijgeleide krijgen om het land te verlaten. De NVJ en het genootschap zijn verontrust over de zorgelijke situatie van de Nederlandse journalisten die op dit moment in Egypte werkzaam zijn. De NVJ raadt op dit moment journalisten af om naar Egypte te reizen. Het blijft volgens de NVJ ieders eigen verantwoordelijkheid om een afweging te maken, “doch dat de ontwikkelingen van gisteren en vanochtend zodanig zijn dat wij ons genoodzaakt voelen om dit zeer uitzonderlijke advies af te geven.”
