Occupy language: the struggle over meaning

Contrary to the world view they've been promoting for so long, politicians and traditional media organisations are beginning to grasp the existence of a compelling alternative: that democracy cannot endure in a society designed by and operated almost solely for the benefit of the rich and powerful. Changing the larger narrative is much more difficult, however, when we're stuck with deeply misleading language – some so commonly used that we scarcely consider the real meaning – guiding us towards debatable conclusions.

If journalists gave a bit more thought to the words they use routinely, they might steer their audiences toward better understanding. Consider this example. To be sure, one of the meanings of "to earn" is "to profit financially" – but it is not the only one. And it's also why, as I said in a recent book, I would ban the word "worth" when "wealth" was more accurate and neutral. Occupy Language? Courtesy of Scott Johnson Scott Johnson had published only two issues of his Occupied Oakland Tribune when he received a cease and desist order from The Oakland Tribune's parent company, the Bay Area News Group. "The first thing I thought was, Is this real? The whole thing just kind of blew me away," he says.

The Oakland Tribune contends that Johnson's use of their name, albeit "Occupied," and an altered Tribune tower logo are infringements on the company's trademark. Huntington, who did not respond for comment, said that Occupied Oakland Tribune's name and logo were "a problem," though the Bay Area News Group was considering dissolving the Oakland Tribune until late 2011 amidst a round of heavy cutbacks. "As soon as I had any time to think about it, it became more and more clear that we can win this thing," says Johnson. The Occupied Times of London. In Chicago, tens of thousands have occupied--marching, sitting in, assembling and taking the spirit of the movement to their schools and workplaces. But until now, the movement hasn't had an independent media outlet to represent it. Our project is the Occupied Chicago Tribune, a four-page broadsheet newspaper with an anticipated first issue print run of 20,000.

We created this paper to provide an outlet for reporting, commentary and analysis on the growing Occupy movement, its unique application in our city and the struggles of the 99%. Bouyed by the protests around the world and frustrated by popular news sources’ representation of the movement, we are dedicated to honest coverage aimed at spreading the message of, and informing, the Occupy movement.

(Occupied Chicago Tribune) CHICAGO, June 5, 2012— A couple of weeks ago I discovered an article I wrote posted in full on another media website under a different title. I immediately contacted the Communities @WashingonTimes.com editor and we emailed cease and desist notices to the offending site. Now they're also spreading to banks' websites. A program called Occupy the URL, launched Tuesday, will turn any website into a protest, complete with pop-up photos of Occupy Wall Street protesters. Users need only insert the URL they wish to occupy. The program doesn't actually change a website it targets, but rather creates a mashup of the page and protester images under a new URL. Occupy the Web: Hackers join worldwide protest. Matt Ewing, founder of green tech company Rewire Labs, decided on Tuesday the Occupy Wall Street movement needed a technology boost.

Occupy the Web: Hackers join worldwide protest

So he held a San Francisco Hackathon Friday night, aptly named “Occupy the Web, hacking for the 99 percent.” Occupy movements targeting corporate corruption have spread outside of the its Occupy Wall Street origins. Indeed, the day of Ewing’s hackathon over 4,000 people marched in San Francisco under the same Occupy flag. Many have accused the protesters of having no core vales, no unity, but the developers that gathered Friday night disagreed. “We’re used to seeing manufactured politics — you have the RNC [Republican National Convention] saying, ‘Okay we’re going to have rallies with a clearly defined structure,’” said Ewing in an interview with VentureBeat.
