Dat deed ze toen een groep van ongeveer honderd mensen die protesteerden tegen de inhaligheid van het bedrijfsleven een gebod negeerden om het plein waarop ze demonstreerden te verlaten. Tussen de vijftien en twintig mensen van Occupy Melbourne, een lokale tak van de Occupy Wall Street-beweging, werden opgepakt en ongeveer twintig mensen, onder wie twee agenten, raakten lichtgewond bij schermutselingen die aan de arrestaties vooraf gingen. Verscheidene betogers schreeuwden en huilden toen de politie ze weg sleepte van het stadsplein waar ze sinds 15 oktober bivakkeerden. Stadsbestuur Na bijna een week vond het stadsbestuur het mooi geweest en gaf de betogers tot vrijdag om het plein te verlaten.
De meeste demonstranten negeerden dat bevel en vormden arm in arm een menselijke keten terwijl ze 'Dit is een vreedzaam protest! ' riepen. Nederland.
