Court order: City can’t keep Occupy Wall Street protesters and their stuff out of Zuccotti Park   Aaron Showalter for New York Daily News An unidentified Occupy Wall Street protestor is wrestled to the ground then hauled off by police. The two-month-old shantytown that was the symbolic heart of the Occupy Wall Street movement is no more — and the NYPD vows it won’t rise again. After an overnight raid razed the tent city in Zuccotti Park early Tuesday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Stallman upheld the city’s right to enforce “reasonable” rules to maintain safety and hygiene.

He said the protesters may have a right to free speech, but they had not demonstrated a First Amendment right to camp. By evening, the city began letting protesters back into the park — but barred them from bringing any tents, tarps or gear. Although the new rules against tents and generators will make staying overnight near-impossible once temperatures drop, the jubilant crowd declared victory.

They jumped onto benches and waved American flags. “We got the park back. Others spent the morning in mourning. Order Re Liberty Park. Click to enlarge: Read the full court order. AMY GOODMAN: Nearly two months into Occupy Wall Street, New York City police have carried out a major crackdown on the protesters’ Lower Manhattan encampment, dismantling tents, confiscating belongings, arresting more than 70 people.

At around 1:00 in the morning local time, police officers in riot gear encircled Zuccotti Park, renamed by the protesters Liberty Square, ordering them to leave. Although most demonstrators complied, a group of around 200 or 300 people refused, locking their arms together in the middle of the park. They were eventually detained after a tense standoff that saw police use pepper spray and hit protesters with batons. Police meanwhile took to dismantling the protesters’ encampment, tearing down tents, tossing the sea of belongings, clothing and equipment into large dump trucks. Hundreds of sanitation workers participated in the trashing of the private belongings. DANIEL ALTERMAN: Yes, I met— OWS witness: Brutal lockdown in Zuccotti Park to fuel new protests. Since then, Occupy Wall Street has become a national and even international symbol – with similarly styled occupations popping up in cities and towns across America and around the world. A growing popular movement has significantly altered the national narrative about our economy, our democracy, and our future. Late into last night, we on the Occupy Wall Street PR team were reflecting on the successes, challenges and the aims of our movement up to this point.

Over the weekend, some 20 writers sent us their thoughts on their experience with direct democracy and the evolution of the movement. PR working group member Jason Ahmadi texted the team from a police van full of 13 arrestees, and we soon discovered that NYC council member Ydanis Rodríguez had been arrested and was bleeding from the head.

UPDATE: The Society Of Professional Journalists has condemned the arrests of reporters carried out by the New York Police Department during their raid of the Occupy Wall Street encampment. In a statement on Tuesday, the group noted that at least six journalists had been arrested, and called "for all charges against these journalists to be dropped and for greater care by police to avoid arresting or otherwise obstructing journalists who are simply and clearly doing their jobs. " It also stressed that "the journalists were either wearing press credentials or explained to police that they were reporters covering the protests," and argued, "they were clearly exercising the constitutional right of a free press...it is clear now that many journalists have been erroneously arrested without cause.

" The New York Press club also condemned the Bloomberg administration for its apparent efforts to block journalists from witnessing the raid. Loading Slideshow. Media Pushed Back from Protest Raid. We, the members of the Sustainability Working Group at Occupy Wallstreet, stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of this movement.

We are outraged by the actions of the NYPD and Mayor Bloomberg, at the violent assault on the peaceful protesters of the Zucotti park encampment. It is not through oppression, but through innovation that will enable us to create positive change in this world. The Sustainability Working Group has served as a poignant and innovative enclave in this movement, seeking to act with ethics and morality as our guide. Last night, in destroying the encampment, the NYPD destroyed all of our hard work including the recently deployed pedal power bike systems that powered the entire camp. This is a system of power created for the people, by the people, delivered directly to the people. The strong arm of the NYPD has sought to marginalize our innovative efforts with their careless actions. Was the New York Times Embedded with the NY Police Department Prior to the #OWS Raid?

I was following the events closely on Twitter last night. the first notice of the pending love came from a tweet by the muscian Questo, who announced he had just driven by thousands of police in riot gear by South Street.Various tweets among #OWS folks debated the significance of this and then the NYPD was spotted moving, the emergency #OWS tweet went out and I also got an email on it.

In the photo series, the high resolution image from South Street Seaport is indeed a bit sus, unless the NYPD has started memorializing its operations for the benefit of posterity and favored media outlets.
