In many cities, including most prominently Oakland and New York, tent encampments on public spaces by the Occupy Wall Street movement have been cleared in early morning raids by police (read about the Oakland situation here). This time, at least, police violence seems to have been minimal. But what is regrettable is the use by city leaders of the lame excuse that "crime" problems necessitated the end of the encampments. It may be that the Occupy Wall street movement must generate new meaningful actions to build its momentum, but the claims that the encampments were generating unacceptable levels of crime is both false and reflexive. To the latter point first.

News: Off The Press : Occupy UCLA campout in Bruin Plaza short-lived

Originally scheduled to begin Monday, the first tent was pitched by the group late Tuesday morning, but university police and the fire marshal told the group their tent needed to be taken down before they left Tuesday afternoon because they did not have the necessary permits. According to the California Code of Regulations, temporary shelters, such as tents, are not permitted on UC campuses, unless appropriate permits and official permission has been granted, said UCPD sergeant Miguel Banuelos. The group’s occupation of campus will have to wait for other reasons. Occupy UCLA simply does not have the support base to stage a campout, said Joseph Silva, a third-year history student. “We don’t have the numbers right now,” he said. By Editorial Board The “Occupy” movement has begun to filter onto college campuses, and UCLA is no exception.

By Editorial Board If the 200 protesters marching down Westwood Boulevard Wednesday were looking for attention, they found it. But not all of it was productive. Though their goals were similar, Wednesday’s march was a far cry from Occupy UCLA’s short-lived campout and quiet table on Bruin Walk just a week ago. The protesters started at the heart of campus in Bruin Plaza and headed into the Village. The intersection of Wilshire and Westwood boulevards was shut down. A disturbance was made, a voice was heard. And while many of the marchers were UCLA students, they weren’t led by their peers.
