Visayans should not expect wage increase bigger than P10

(CDN PHOTO/TONEE DESPOJO) BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Workers in Western Visayas should not expect an increase in the minimum wage higher than P10 a day, according to a top labor official in the region. Ponciano Ligutom, Western Visayas director of the Department of Labor and Employment, said wage increases in the region were traditionally lower than those in Metro Manila. He pointed out, however, that this was his own personal observation as the actual amount of the wage increase for the region will have to be determined by the regional tripartite wages and productivity board. Wennie Sancho, who represents the labor sector on the regional wage board, said Ligutom’s statement was “preposterous.” 4Ps beneficiaries get P9.8M. About 6,000 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries in San Carlos City got P9.8 million during the recent on-site distribution and cash cards from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Twelve more local government units (LGUs) in the province of Iloilo have been included in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the national government. The 12 new municipalities covered by the program are: Badiangan, Barotac Nuevo, Cabatuan, Concepcion, Dingle, Dumangas, Estancia, Mina, New Lucena, Pototan, Tigbauan, and Zarraga. Soliman said 4Ps or the giving of conditional cash transfer (CCT) to poor families has reduced poverty incidence in the country to 29% compared to some 50% in 2010. Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) chief Dr. Neneth Pador said the 12 new municipalities to be covered by the program are Badiangan, Barotac Nuevo, Cabatuan, Concepcion, Dingle, Dumangas, Estancia, Mina, New Lucena, Pototan, Tigbauan, and Zarraga. She said the signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the local chief executives of the beneficiaries is set on March 28 at Smallville 21 Hotel in Iloilo City. The 4Ps, a poverty reduction and social development strategy of the national government, was first implemented in the towns of Ajuy, Batad, Carles, Igbaras, Lemery, Maasin, San Dionisio, San Enrique, San Joaquin and San Rafael.
