Beetles inspire ice-resistant aircraft surfaces. Rerouting warm engine air and pumping ice-melting chemicals onto the wings are a couple of ways to keep aircraft surfaces free of frost during flight, but researchers are looking for a more efficient technique. Taking their inspiration from a water-gathering desert beetle, scientists have developed a patterned surface on which the spread of ice can be controlled and prevented. They say the material could be scaled up and applied to not only aircraft parts, but also wind turbines, heat pump coils and car windshields. The Namib Desert Beetle is a clever little critter that survives the dry African desert by way of a natural water-collecting system on its shell.

This consists of small bumps where moisture from the air forms tiny droplets, and a smoother, water-repelling surface underneath which funnels the gathering water into the beetle's mouth. Using photolithography, the team layered a bumpy water-attracting pattern over a smooth water-repelling pattern on a small silicon wafer. Ricoh GXR Digitalkamera-Gehäuseeinheit - Prosumer. A mock-up of Ricoh's new GXR Lens Mount Unit on display at the CP Camera and Photo Imaging Show in Yokohama recently Image Gallery (6 images) Since introducing its modular GXR camera system towards the end of 2009, Ricoh has kept its promise of regularly adding new interchangeable units to the setup.

The line now includes four units which between them offer a broad range of different lens and sensor configurations. Now, the company is branching out a bit with the announcement of an expansion unit that will give users the freedom to use different lenses. View all The new GXR Lens Mount Unit is scheduled for Q3 availability and will feature an APS-C size (23.6 x 15.7mm), 12.9 megapixel CMOS sensor and a newly-developed focal plane shutter – but it's the lens mount part of the module that's the most interesting feature.

For the first time, GXR users will also be able to attach any Leica M mount lens on the camera system. More details will follow prior to release. Buy this on Amazon. Ricoh announces release of Leica-M compatible GXR lens mount. Ricoh has announced a September release for its new M-mount lens unit for the GXR modular camera system Image Gallery (7 images) Ricoh has now detailed its new Leica M-mount unit for the modular GXR photographic system and announced a release date. In addition to the wide range of Leica lenses, users of the 12 megapixel GXR MOUNT A12 module will also be able to access other mount configurations via a conversion adapter. There's a silent electronic shutter feature for those quiet occasions, some new creative scene modes and a number of useful lens correction settings.

View all Ricoh has confirmed that its new die cast magnesium A12 M-mount unit for the GXR camera system will feature a 12.3 (effective) megapixel, APS-C size CMOS sensor and benefit from an included checking device that will verify the physical compatibility of other adapter-attached lenses. Ricoh has built in a series of new lens correction features, such as color shading, peripheral illumination and distortion correction.
