On June 5, 1965, Joan Baez played a special concert at the BBC Television Theatre in Shepherd’s Bush, London. Although her fame at the time was newly eclipsed by that of her recently estranged lover Bob Dylan, Baez was very much in her prime. The concert was recorded less than a month after Dylan’s 1965 tour of England, chronicled in D.A. Pennebaker’s film Don’t Look Back, in which Dylan failed to invite Baez onstage despite the fact that she had introduced him to national audiences in America.
Baez plays several Dylan songs in the BBC concert, along with other folk and pop songs from her repertoire. Included is Baez’s first hit single, her version of the Phil Ochs song “There but for Fortune,” which was released the same month in America but would not come out in the UK until the following month. When I fist saw this Grateful Dead Shows map my first thought was that the remaining band members had decided to organise a really, really big reunion tour. On closer inspection however the map seems to be a map of all the venues that the Grateful Dead have ever played. It is isn't often that we feature a non-API map on Google Maps Mania but there is something lo-fi about this embedded Google My Map that seems appropriate to the band being memorialised. What's more the map is still useful to any music fans interested in the many live appearances of the Grateful Dead. Users can click on any of the venue markers and then click on the "Search for items related to this venue" link to get details of all the band's appearances at the venue. Chubby Checker's lawsuit over a smartphone app that claims to measures penis size is the latest in a checkered record at attempting to maintain relevancy through the twists and turns of pop culture. The app is is called the "Chubby Checker" referring to a slang term for an erection. The 71-year-old Checker, whose real name is Ernest Evans, is suing Hewlett Packard and its subsidiary Palm, Inc. for $500 million, claiming the app associates his name with obscene, sexual connotation and images, without giving him "compensation for the unauthorized use of the Chubby Checker name and trademark," Webosnation.com reported. The lawsuit comes as Checker tries to reinvigorate his career by promoting "Changes," a new single. "With all of this activity surrounding the excitement and the legend, we're more interested in airplay than litigation," Checker said in a statement to The Huffington Post.
