Twitter Only Gave Meerkat 2 Hours' Notice Before Cutting Access To The Social Graph. Ben Rubin, the cofounder of the streaming social video app Meerkat, had just arrived at SXSW in Austin, Texas, started handing out bright yellow T-shirts, and was enjoying his app’s massive buzz when he got the call. It was from Twitter: They wanted to let him know that Meerkat’s access to the Twitter graph was being limited within the next two hours. "We are not naïve, we knew it was coming," Rubin tells Fast Company.
"We thought that we would at least get a week notice—a fair game. " Meerkat borrows Twitter’s social graph so that you don’t need to recruit a whole new group of friends to watch your video live stream using the app. Instead, when you start a session, the app sends a notification to anyone with the app who follows you—a practice that critics have said is a bit spammy. Nevertheless, the app has struck a chord. Since launching two weeks ago, it has attracted celebrity users like Jared Leto along with coverage from CNN, The Guardian, and Time. SXSW: Millennials Trust User-Generated Content 50% More Than Traditional Media. New research on millennials and user generated content was revealed at SXSW’s 4th Annual Social Media Advertising Consortium (SMAC) Influencers Brunch on Sunday. The study was conducted by Crowdtap and Ipsos Media CT in conjunction with SMAC. The findings provide marketers with insights into millennials’ media habits and how to access them.
This generation will soon have record-breaking purchasing power and the study confirms that millennials are most influenced by user-generated content. As a whole, millennials spend a whopping 18 hours per day consuming different media across several devices. User-generated content makes up 30 percent of that time (5.4 hours), second only to traditional media like print, television and radio at 33 percent. But millennials trust information found in user-generated content 50 percent more than information from traditional media sources and find user-generated content 35 percent more memorable than other sources. *featured image: www.viralheat.com.

Bruce Springsteen offered much to take away from his keynote address at Austin's annual South by Southwest music festival. Springsteen made corny jokes, played a little music on an acoustic guitar and showed remarkable humility, saying he thought of himself as "an average guy with a slightly above average gift. " Here's mine, repeated numerous times: Bruce Springsteen used the word "pop. " Many are calling Springsteen's talk a pocket history of rock music, comparing it to the best orations given at the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions. The Best Of SXSW, Illustrated. The most common way to experience SXSW if you’re not actually there is anecdotally, in succinct social soundbites and Instagrammed snapshots.
For the last two years, though, agency Ogilvy & Mather has provided another way for interested office-bound parties (or event attendees who didn’t quite make that keynote) to digest the important parts of key talks. Ogilvy once again sent the skilled "note-taking" artists at ImageThink down to Austin to create Ogilvy Notes, thick-slice picture commentary on the festival’s featured presentations. Ogilvy Notes, which also has established a Twitter presence, uses a method called graphic recording, which reduces each panel to a storyboard/flowchart hybrid--and renders some fuller fleshed-out breakdowns redundant. See for instance the "Expanding Our Intelligence Without Limit" panel, in which Time magazine’s Lev Grossman interviews the futurist Ray Kurzweil.
SXSW Interactive 2012: As Crowd Swells, New Technologies Emerge for Intimate Relationships. Left: Austin on Sunday, after rain dispersed. If you didn’t attend SXSW and want a first hand perspective (or maybe you did go and partied too hard) then this post is for you. There’s a lot to learn from SXSW: A Petri dish of social and interactive behaviors, a bellwether of what could be a trend for the year. It also has a downside from overhype, fanboyism, and an over inflated view of behaviors that may not persist as people return to work. This year the conference was bigger than ever, word on the street is the entire 2012 festival has grown to include 50k (Tuesday evening, the festival said its official paid attendance count for 2012 was 24,569, up from 19,364 in 2011, a change of about 27 percent –via Omar of Austin 360, hat tip to Bryan Person) Secondly, interactive is getting larger each year, including dozens of sessions not in the convention center.
