The Social Graph and Objects of Sociality

One of the biggest problems on the Web is joining a new social networking site. To do so means going through the painful effort of creating a profile and adding all of our friends, something we’ve done over and over…at least once for each social networking site we already belong to. This is quickly becoming an issue for everyone who uses social networks. This problem has led to a flurry of activity, highlighted by LiveJournal creator Brad Fitzpatrick’s missive: Thoughts on the Social Graph, in which he clearly outlines the issues involved as well as some worthy goals to shoot for.

Brad’s piece was followed shortly after by the Bill of Rights for Users of the Social Web, which among its rights is the right to allow users to syndicate their own profile and friend data. In addition there are countless groups getting together to try and solve this problem. The Online Collaboration Authority, Web Conferencing, Live Prese. /Message. /Message was started in January 2006, following my departure from Corante and the former Get Real blog.

/Message

The tagline for /Message was ‘the operating manual for the social revolution' which shows the orientation I have had, and will continue, in my writings here, at this new blog. I am in the process of moving over the great majority of posts from /Message to this new simplified domain, www.stoweboyd.com, now without the following /message. This is not a new blog conceptually, just a reformation of the previous one. The change is really about the problems I have encountered with the previous blog platform (see Why I Am Going To Leave Squarespace) and the desires I have for blogging these days (Goodbye /Message, Hello Stowe Boyd). I plan to move nearly all of the previous /Message to Stowe Boyd over the next few weeks, so bear with me. Some of the most popular posts are highlighted in the sidebar to the left, and that list will be expanded to about 100 posts.

FINDINGS. What do the different stories tell us?

FINDINGS

We tried to cover the field of e-collaboration among Dutch NGOs as broadly as possible, to give an impression of the many different ways Dutch NGOs use e-collaboration in their work. The interviews are held with one person from an organisation, who was in many cases the initiator of the project. All stories are independent and relate a personal opinion of the interviewee about e-collaboration. Therefore it is not possible to collate them all together although we can use these stories to highlight the questions people encounter, and the stimulation and starting of the process. The interviews are the basis for these conclusions, although the meetings of the learning community and the interaction at the D-group helped in formulating the questions and problems more strongly. These conclusions are built up the way the interviews were. Orientation and experimentation One general observation is about the phase Dutch NGOs are in at the moment. H2O Playlist: Home.
