In my time in Japan, I haven’t gone to any weddings, but have attended five funerals. The father of a co-worker, the mother of another co-worker, a student, and Masako’s grandmother. Now I’ve been to my fifth. I went in to work on Tuesday, to one of my two junior high schools, and learned that the wife of the assistant principal had passed away.
The Japanese are not a religious people in the western sense of the word. It had been nine years since I attended a funeral in Japan, and in addition local and family traditions often influence and color traditions. So I did what I knew. I wore my black suit to school the next day with a colorful necktie. Outside the house was a signboard telling you you were at the right place, though the throngs of black-clad people make it pretty obvious. We all sat seiza and waited our turn. Approach. Mr. The service concluded. 2008 June « Far Away and Close to Home. For Golden Week, Masako and I went back to her hometown of Tarui in western Gifu prefecture.
Golden Week is a mini holiday period made up of a couple of holidays (Green Day, Children’s Day) plus a weekend. It takes place the first week of May each year. Readers will thus note that this post is a month late, but oh well… Pictures, please! Tarui holds a festival during Golden Week, as many municipalities do. Fish the toys out of the little stream… a classic festival concession. A mom n’ pop grocery, unchanged the last fifty years.

This float was situated in an elementary school parking lot, allowing me to give you this shot from the side, showing the whole float and its attending train filled with equipment.
