15th Century Flemish Style Portraits Recreated In Airplane Lavatory. 836K views 182 days ago by Justina While on a long-haul flight, when most people would sleep, read a book or chew on complimentary snacks, Nina Katchadourian spends her time locked in the airplane’s lavatory taking selfies in the style of 15th century Flemish paintings. Her series, dubbed “Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style,” is part of a bigger piece called “Seat Assignment,” which is based on improvising with materials close at hand while in flight . Photojournalist Steve McCurry is best known for shooting one of the most famous photographs ever taken -– 1985′s “Afghan Girl,” an image of a young girl with sea green eyes staring defiantly into the camera. But war and those affected by it are not his only subjects. “Like most photographers, I’m fascinated by people in everyday situations,” he says. “The work I do is mostly wandering and observing human nature and human activity, working and playing and leisure time.

As you’re walking around the streets of China, India, New York, whererver -– it is fun to photograph people simply doing things.” One of his ongoing projects is compiling a collection of photos of people reading, entitled “Fusion: The Synergy of Energy and Words” (Part I and Part II). McCurry’s photos cross these cultural and socioeconomic boundaries. As a photographer, McCurry is always on the hunt for the “unguarded moment,” that slice of time that reveals something personal and honest. Thailand Afghanistan Jaipur, India. Finnish photographer Kai Fagerström presents unique photo series, where he captures wild animals making themselves comfortable in abandoned houses in the woods of Finland. Titled The House in the Woods, the photo series is set in cottages near Kai’s summer house, which were abandoned by their tenants after the owner of the place died in a fire.

Award-winning photographer noticed how the place was slowly being reclaimed by the nature, and what started as a few snapshots, ended up being a book, published in Finnish, German, and English. “Deserted buildings are so full of contradictions,” says Kai. “I am fascinated by the way nature reclaims spaces that were, essentially, only ever on loan to humans.” Kai usually works with a clear image of what he wants to achieve in his head, although it make take some time for all elements to fall into place. Children From Around The World Photographed with Their Toys. 113K views 397 days ago by Justina Toys can tell a whole story about the child’s background and family, and even the professions of the parents. In his photo series ‘Toy Stories’, Italian photographer Gabriele Galimberti traveled around the globe for 18-months and photographed children with their toys. Gabriele would often play with kids before actually starting the photoshoot, and he noticed how differently children from different backgrounds accepted his presence: “The richest children were more possessive.

At the beginning, they wouldn’t want me to touch their toys, and I would need more time before they would let me play with them. Children also ascribe similar functions to their toys – during his journey, Galimberti met a boy in Texas and a girl in Malawi who both believed their plastic dinosaurs would protect them from dangers at night.

“I don’t want to tell people what to see in my images,” she says, “It shows what I wish to express but everyone is free to figure out what the picture says to them. A matchstick is something so ordinary and simple that one could hardly imagine it could become an object of art. A Russian artist Stanislav Aristov however, unveils the artistic potential of matches in his his “Спички” (“matchsticks” in Russian) series. Beautiful Friendship Between a Grandmother and Her Odd-eyed Cat. For over 13 years now, Japanese photographer Miyoko Ihara has been taking pictures of her grandmother Misao, in order to leave a living proof of the woman’s life. Eight years ago, though, Misao found a wonderful companion – an odd-eyed kitten that found his way to the shed. The 88-year-old woman named him Fukumaru, which translated from Japanese roughly means “a circle of good fortune”.

Misao and her odd-eyed feline friend have been doing everything together ever since. The woman still goes out into the fields every day, and Fukumaru follows her every step. They eat, rest, water the plants and do their chores together. Seeing that the strong bond and love between the two shines out of every photo, Miyoko published a hard cover portrait album, called “Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat“. Many photographers like to experiment with long exposure photography techniques, but an Australian Lincoln Harrison gives a new definition to the word “long”. A 37-year-old Victorian showcases a portfolio of mesmerizing long exposure star trail photography, with some of his photo shoots taking up to 15 hours. The photos are made at his personal favorite spot over Lake Eppalock, in the Australian outback.

The star swirls are the result of the rotation of the Earth, and makes you think you’re witnessing the stars traveling across the sky. “With no buildings for miles the sky is so clear and it’s amazing to be able to capture the beauty of the night’s sky on camera,” says Lincoln. Curiously enough, Lincoln only bought his first decent camera – a Nikon D3100 – a couple of years ago, simply willing to make some pictures of the stuff he wanted to sell on eBay.

However, that turned out a bit differently: Website: lincolnharrison.com. Self-Portraits in Awkward Body Positions & Odd Scenarios. Dancing Colors: Making Sound Waves Visible by Fabian Oefner. 13K views 510 days ago by Jolita Switzerland-based photographer Fabian Oefner decided to connect visual world to an acoustic one in a way that would illustrate an actual sound wave in a photograph. He does it by putting some colorful pigments on the speaker which is covered with a thin foil. Then, when the sound goes through the speaker, it triggers some movements and the vibrating speaker makes the colors shout in the air. This is the moment when a colorful sound wave is formed. Thank you, laws of physics! The artist’s job is to capture these moments so that we all could admire the dancing colors. Website: www.fabianoefner.com Like Dislike 0 points Vote:

Website: lensart.ru (via) Like Dislike 0 points Vote: Awe-inspiring Parallel Worlds by Karezoid Michal Karcz. Some artists get to the point when their usual medium or technique starts to limit their visions. This is exactly what happened to a Polish artist Michal Karcz who found that painting and the ordinary dark room photography techniques didn’t allow him to fully realize his potential. Born in 1977 in Warsaw, the graduate of the High School of the Arts was first passionate about painting.

However, in the early 90′s, he became drawn to photography only to realize that the dark-room techniques alone were almost as limiting as the paintbrush and canvas. Luckily, the developing technology allowed him to combine the two with the help of some digital tools. “This digital photography and software gave me the opportunity to generate unique realities that are impossible to create with ordinary dark room techniques,” says Michal. Most of his work is “a journey to the places which don’t exist”. Website: michalkarcz.com.

How Landscape Photos Are Really Made. Earth is beautiful and full of surprises. So is Matthew Albanese, a New York-based artist, creating stunningly realistic landscapes from everyday objects and photographing them as if they were a part of the earth. Albanese named his project “Strange Worlds” for it really is strange to see coral reefs made from walnuts, or mountains built from cinnamon. Being a professional photographer and using various shooting techniques, Matthew is able to alter the appearance of materials and create images that seem perfectly natural. For those daring to doubt his skills, Albanese has prepared some sneak-peek images of his installations at their early stage, allowing to see the construction process and the difference between the diorama and the final result.
