Confirmed: Facebook Messenger will eventually do payments

When the company first announced it had hired Marcus, the former president of PayPal, the industry took it as a strong hint that Facebook was looking to monetize its messaging app. After all, Marcus joined PayPal after parent-company eBay acquired his mobile-payments startup Zong in 2011, first leading PayPal’s mobile efforts before taking the lead as president. While monetization speculations were broad at the time, Zuckerberg’s confirmation that payments will come to Messenger someday is almost too obvious now. But what Facebook will do with WhatApp, a hugely popular messaging app the company acquired a few months ago.

Facebook has maintained that it will keep it separate for the time being, but really, who knows? Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over 1.15 billion monthly active users. What Qualities Make a Good Startup Engineer?

Some of the most promising candidates that I’ve interviewed in the past six years across three startups (Ooyala, Quora, and now Quip) would bring 5+ years of experience from a top engineering company like Google, only to do poorly during our interview processes. Usually, the candidate wasn’t a bad engineer; in fact, he might have even excelled at his current job. Pinch Media Data Shows The Average Shelf Life Of An iPhone App Is Less Than 30 Days.

There may be more than 20,000 iPhone apps out there that have been downloaded more than 500 million times, but what is the average shelf life of each app?

Pinch Media Data Shows The Average Shelf Life Of An iPhone App Is Less Than 30 Days

Greg Yardley, CEO of Pinch Media, offers some stats based on the 30 million+ downloads his iPhone app analytics startup has kept tabs on. One of the most telling slides in a recent presentation he gave shows the drop-off rate in iPhone app usage (see above; entire slide presentation embedded below). For free applications, only about 20 percent of users return to use the app the first day after they download it, and then it quickly drops off from there.

By 30 days out, less than 5 percent are using the app. The chart for paid apps shows a slightly steeper fall-off rate. The secret to mobile success is all about innovative ads. SAN FRANCISCO — Anyone hoping to make a splash in mobile needs to pay special attention to their marketing tactics.

The secret to mobile success is all about innovative ads

That’s according to a discussion between Mike Bidgoli, the VP of product at Living Social, and Adam Foroughi, co-founder and CEO of AppLovin, today at our MobileBeat 2014 conference. The two companies partnered a year ago to spice up Living Social’s mobile presence: It passes along users’ clickstream data to AppLovin, which it uses to retarget mobile ads featuring recommended products back to users.
