21. Rhetoric

As we progress, we will see why rhetoric is of crucial importance in understanding philosophy and indeed any area of inquiry. What is Rhetoric? There have been many different definitions of rhetoric over its long history, which stretches back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans in particular. However, it is generally understood as the study of writing and speaking effectively; that is, to appreciate how language is at work when we write or speak it and employ any lessons learned in making our own writing and speaking better.
