Architects: CL3 Architects Location: Island East, Hong Kong, China Project Team: William Lim, Raymond Chow, Arthur Wai Client: Swire Properties Project Area: 17,000 sqm Project Year: 2010 Photographs: Nirut Benjabanpo East, a business hotel located in a residential/commercial neighbourhood in Hong Kong, takes a different look at hotel design by planning from the inside-out. CL3 Architects, the interior architect was appointed early in the design process, 4.5 years ago, to carry out the space planning of the rooms and public areas, consisting of the entrance, lobby reception, all day dining, health club, 339 guestrooms, 6 suites and a rooftop bar, as an integral part of the architecture.

It is the interior spatial experience rather than ornamentation that shapes the design. The name “EAST” resulted from the design concept which interprets the contemporary Oriental/Hong Kong travel experience as being world class, efficient, modern, playful, with a touch of Chinese culture. This unpredictable growth, like all lately explored villages of Mediterranean and Aegean region, makes an inevitable transformation both sociologically and physically in Çeşme. Main mass has been made closer to the border of the road. Downtown LA Hotel / XTEN Architecture. XTEN Architecture is planning a new, 65,000-square-foot hotel in downtown Los Angeles, California. The monolithic concrete structure will be carved by a system of slots and slices that bring light, air and views deep into the building. Equipped with a performance-based lobby, two subterranean bars, restaurant and a rooftop terrace featuring an infinity edge pool, this mid-rise hotel will surely attract some attention. Located on a 50×150 foot infill parcel in downtown Los Angeles, the freestanding concrete structure will be surrounded by alleys and streets. The lobby is an abstract, multi-use gallery and performance space resting on a floor clad in bricks salvaged from the parcel’s existing building. The hotel rooms are conceived as solid volumes which float freely within the structural frame provided by the overall concrete monolith.

From the interior, the building is light, airy.
