National Sleep Foundation 2014 Sleep In America Poll Finds Children Sleep Better When Parents Establish Rules, Limit Technology and Set a Good Example

(March 3, 2014)— Although sleep problems persist among many American children, parents can make a difference by setting boundaries around electronics use, enforcing rules and setting a good example. These are the latest findings from the National Sleep Foundation’s (NSF) Sleep in America® poll , an annual study that began in 1991. The 2014 poll took a deeper look into the sleep practices and beliefs of the modern family with school-aged children. “For children, a good night’s sleep is essential to health, development and performance in school,” said Kristen L. Sleep Studies: Tests & Results. According to the National Institutes of Health, 50 to 70 million Americans are affected by chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems that can significantly diminish health, alertness and safety.

Sleep Studies: Tests & Results

Untreated sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes and other chronic diseases. What Does Sleep Do For Us? Although scientists are still trying to learn exactly why people need sleep, animal studies show that sleep is necessary for survival.

What Does Sleep Do For Us?

Above all, sleep appears necessary for our brains to work properly. Too little sleep leaves us drowsy and unable to concentrate the next day. It also leads to impaired memory and physical performance and leaves us less able to carry out complex cognitive, motor or learning tasks. Some experts believe sleep gives neurons a chance to maintain themselves. Without sleep, neurons may become so overloaded by normal cellular activities that they begin to malfunction. Americans Need More Sleep, According to New Study. Why Sleep Matters. PennMedicine Center for Sleep: Research Programs. The Center for Sleep has a rich, multi-disciplinary research program in both basic science and patient-oriented research.

PennMedicine Center for Sleep: Research Programs

The goals of basic science research in the Center include the understanding of the molecular mechanisms regulating sleep and wakefulness, the functions of sleep at a most basic molecular level, and how aging and disease disrupt these processes. Basic Science Research New molecular mechanisms that regulate sleep are being identified. By examining the relevance of these molecules across different species, investigators at the CSCN have the ability to identify evolutionary conserved molecules regulating sleep. While investigators come from diverse fields, there is a focused emphasis of the research: understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating sleep and wakefulness, the functions of sleep at a most basic molecular level, and how aging and disease disrupt these processes. A Report by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Spring 2010 Introduction Because American children consume more than 7 billion school meals every year, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) evaluates meals served in the National School Lunch Program and offers ideas for improving school nutrition.

The Five Most Unhealthful School Lunches

This year, as Congress considers making changes to school nutrition programs, PCRM dietitians analyzed lunch menus from 18 elementary schools across the country to determine which commonly served meals may be putting children’s health at risk and which healthful school meals should be offered more often.
