Silicon Valley will destroy your job: Amazon, Facebook and our sick new economy. An Amazon River legend says that its famous pink river dolphins sometimes become shapeshifters and assume human form to seduce unwary travelers and lure them to a magical city called Encante.

Silicon Valley will destroy your job: Amazon, Facebook and our sick new economy

The catch is that this city is underwater. Once you’ve been there you can never go back home. That’s the thing about myths: There’s always a catch. Our society runs on a digital myth, which says that the technology-based economy is different, special and somehow not subject to the principles of mathematics and human nature that govern the rest of our lives.

This myth tells us there is something called a “sharing economy,” a wealth-creating phenomenon with no downsides and no human costs. Photos: The ridiculous mansion that Ukraine’s president abandoned and is now a museum. Editor’s note: When the revolutionaries of the Maidan, Kyiv’s central square, toppled president Viktor Yanukovych in February, he fled the country, leaving behind a 140-hectare (330-acre) estate, Mezhyhirya (or Mezhgorye in Russian), complete with a zoo, a vast mansion, several guesthouses, lakes, fountains, a dock with a faux Spanish galleon, a large collection of classic cars, and more besides.

Seven months on, the estate continues to function as a museum for curious tourists and a wedding site for local couples. Unlike the abandoned palaces of so many despots, it is in practically pristine condition, tended by a group of former revolutionaries who came to gawk and stayed to run the place. The Case for Trailer Parks. Houses made in a factory are a cheap and energy-efficient way for poorer Americans to become homeowners—plus, these days, the mass-produced units can be pretty spiffy.

The Case for Trailer Parks

La Citta Vita/Flickr You’ve seen it before: a house, on a truck, on a highway, slowing down traffic with its yellow “OVERSIZED LOAD” sign, its tan vinyl siding nearly screaming “Trailer Park!” Employers Worried About Critical-Thinking Skills. How does an employer measure critical-thinking skills?

Employers Worried About Critical-Thinking Skills

That’s a pressing question, considering that every company on the planet needs employees who can analyze information in a way that’s ultimately good for the bottom line. But how do you tell which employees have the right aptitude? According to The Wall Street Journal, employers have wildly different methods of evaluating their employees for critical-thinking skills. Pirate Bay Blockade Set For Icelandic Expansion. The fledgling ISP block against The Pirate Bay in freedom-friendly Iceland is already looking like the thin end of the wedge.

Pirate Bay Blockade Set For Icelandic Expansion

After securing an injunction against ISP Vodafone, music rightsholders will now press for injunctions against several of Iceland's other top service providers who have refused to voluntary block the site. In common with many countries around Europe, the movie and music industries in Iceland have been working hard to cut down on copyright infringement online. To this end copyright groups including the local equivalents of the RIAA (STEF) and MPAA (SMAIS) have targeted the leader of the usual suspects, the notorious Pirate Bay. 100-year-old notebook found encased in Antarctic ice is part of Robert Scott's expedition team.

A photography notebook owned by George Murray Levick, a member of British explorer Robert Scott's 1910-1913 Terra Nova Expedition in the Antarctic, was found by conservationist specialists from the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

(Photo : Antarctic Heritage Trust) Robert Scott was a British explorer who died with his several of his companions on his second expedition to the Antarctic due to starvation, exhaustion and the extremely cold weather. More than 100 years after his death, an artifact from his ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913 has emerged. In a statement released on Oct. 20, New Zealand's Antarctic Heritage Trust said that a notebook from Scott's last expedition was discovered trapped in ice in a hut.

Chasing Bayla - Michael Moore's quest to save the right whale

Michael Moore called out. Moore braced himself against the steel of the Zodiac’s platform tower as the boat closed in on the whale in the heaving Florida waters. Through the rangefinder, he could see the tangled mass of ropes cinched tightly around her. It was impossible to tell where the ropes began and where they ended. How to Get Free Repairs Without a Valid Warranty

Without a warranty, the frontline CSR's and their managers "couldn't" do anything, so I was stuck with a phone whose battery might last six hours with a full charge and with which connecting to wifi was a 50/50 proposition. So I emailed the phone provider's "CEO" (those email addresses are always to "executive customer relations"). A day later, some guy at a center in North Carolina called and offered me a slightly better device, so I was happy...until I received the device. This week's Avengers; Age of Ultron trailer was a surprise reveal for everyone — chief among them Marvel itself, who decided to combat a poor-quality leak by publishing the full HD version one week earlier than expected. There's a lot to glean from the trailer if you care to go frame by frame, but the definite centerpiece is Iron Man in a major public fight with the Hulk. Trailers are notorious for taking dramatic scenes out of context for sake of, well, drama. But it ultimately doesn't matter why the Hulk and Iron Man are fighting. What's more important is that Iron Man came prepared for the fight with a pre-built supersuit designed to take on his (former) best friend — and that says as much about Iron Man as it does the entire future of Marvel's cinematic universe.

The War Nerd: How do you deal with wannabe jihadis? An upgrade to business class. By Gary Brecher On October 24, 2014 KUWAIT CITY—It’s been a busy week for Canada’s home-grown jihadis. Monday, October 20: Martin Rouleau, a French-Canadian convert to Islam, ran down two Canadian soldiers with his Nissan Altima, then led the RCMP on a chase that ended when he rolled the Nissan, came up out of the wreck waving a kitchen knife, and got himself shot to death “like he wanted to.” Wednesday, October 22: Michael Zehaf-Babeau, also Quebecois and a recent convert, shot a soldier standing guard at a war memorial then ran into Parliament, firing as he ran, until he was shot dead by the Sergeant-at-Arms. You can look for all kinds of patterns in these shootings — to me, the Quebecois connection seems particularly interesting here — but the most obvious, urgent connection we need to see is that both these guys had tried their best to get out of Canada, and were refused the chance to go to fight in Syria/Iraq.
