The libertarian think tank Niskanen Center is abandoning libertarianism

An uncompromising vision of how the world is supposed to work, and how to fix it, is just too alluring for partisans to ignore. Political parties’ most frenzied supporters are demanding ideological purity from their candidates as they push out moderates, especially on the right. As a result, ever fewer temperate souls are left to hold the middle ground in politics. Yet the libertarian think tank Niskanen Center in Washington, DC, argues the moderate middle is the future. Niskanen president Jerry Taylor wrote in an Oct. 29 essay that he is dropping the libertarian banner the center has shared with the likes of the more conservative Cato Institute. The future of American politics, he argues, is principled compromise, even if the present couldn’t seem further away. ”I think we’re living in a world in which moderation has virtually disappeared,” he says in an interview with Quartz.

As part of its Maxed Out America initiative, the PJ Institute and consulting economist, Laurence Kotlikoff, analyzed U.S. government data to forecast the year when the nation might not be able to borrow money to finance its spending. By carefully analyzing the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) long- and short-term forecasts, the institute was able to identify the year in which U.S. debt could go critical.

Post-Election: The Fiscal Cliff and Beyond

Peterson Foundation launched the Solutions Initiative, which convened policy organizations from across the ideological spectrum to develop plans to achieve long-term fiscal sustainability through the year 2035. This year, to better inform the debate over the fiscal cliff and America's economic future, the Foundation asked five organizations to participate in a second phase of the Solutions Initiative, addressing near-term fiscal challenges and offering updated long-term plans. The results of the Solutions Initiative II will be presented this week at Post-Election: The Fiscal Cliff and Beyond, a special forum convened by the Foundation. The Independent Institute.url.
