The remote UK community living off-grid

Accessible only by boat or a five-mile walk, the residents of Scoraig live in relative isolation, partly powering their homes and school with wind power. Among the inhabitants are crofters with cattle and sheep, a violin maker, a Russian translator, volunteers and a part-time postal worker. Earlier this year, photographer Ed Gold lived alongside the community, documenting people's lives and exploring what drove them to move to this remote location. Lisa, 54 "I have been here 23 years. "It's by no means idealistic and it has its own hardships of the wind and the rain. "You are exposed to the elements - but that's good also as you are aware of what the weather is doing all the time and you're very much in touch with nature and the elements and life.

"We're an ageing population but I guess the bulk of us are between 40 and 65. Hugh, 65 "I came here in 1975. Image copyright Ed Gold Luke, 36.

If You Think the Water Crisis Can't Get Worse, Wait Until the Aquifers Are Drained

We are drawing down these hidden, mostly nonrenewable groundwater supplies at unsustainable rates in the western United States and in several dry regions globally, threatening our future. We are at our best when we can see a threat or challenge ahead. If flood waters are rising, an enemy is rushing at us, or a highway exit appears just ahead of a traffic jam, we see the looming crisis and respond. We are not as adept when threats—or threatened resources—are invisible. Some of us have trouble realizing why invisible carbon emissions are changing the chemistry of the atmosphere and warming the planet. Groundwater comes from aquifers—spongelike gravel and sand-filled underground reservoirs—and we see this water only when it flows from springs and wells. Dave Glasheen: The Lost Boy of Restoration Island. And when Dave swung the dinghy wide around the cape, his customer at last caught sight of the island, a shark’s tooth of sand and grass jutting from a small mountain of impenetrable bush.

Dave Glasheen: The Lost Boy of Restoration Island

Heaven! Dave said to himself. Heavy seas shouldered the tin boat sideways. Up front, mate! Dave shouted over the bee-loud motor. The customer was thinking about how a guy can’t get himself shipwrecked anymore. Photograph by Brian Cassey Head on a swivel! Hours earlier, Dave had picked him up from a World War II–era airstrip many miles distant in the mainland’s thick jungle. This was like a vacation but not.

The customer had inquired after fire towers and bathyspheres, deep caves and sensory-deprivation chambers. The question was not new. The truth was that most things for him had turned into giant, squawking question marks. Instead, he decided to venture to a desert island off the edge of northeastern Australia. This thrilled his customer. He’d been a corporate bloke. Dave blamed the culture. Top 10 Survival Downloads You Should Have » Alabama Preppers Network.
