Girls Lead in Science Exam, but Not in the United States - Interactive Graphic

Countries in Asia and Northern Europe had high scores, and 15-year-old girls consistently outscored boys. But the opposite was true in the United States, where boys scored 2.7 percent better than girls. The trend in Western European countries and the Americas was similar; boys performed better than girls. Students in Eastern and Southern Europe, and the Middle East, had slightly lower overall scores, but girls consistently did better than boys. The exam, which is given every three years, was taken in 2009 by 470,000 students in 65 developed nations. Researchers say cultural forces keeping girls away from scientific careers are strong in the United States, Britain and Canada but far less pervasive in Russia, Asia and the Middle East. And the threat isn't over, as more are expected today and tomorrow as well. The term Tornado Alley is probably quite familiar to everyone. It's an unofficial name given to a swath of land that includes northern Texas, western Oklahoma and most of Kansas, and is where the majority of tornadoes form in the United States. There's a Tornado Alley in Canada as well — actually two, depending on how you look at it. One stretches from Edmonton to Winnipeg, and there's another that runs from Windsor to Ottawa. However, tornadoes don't obey geographic borders or time schedules.

She and her friends head to a bar known for concocting fancy cocktails. She orders one that arrives with a plume of smoke careening off the top. Except the smoke is liquid nitrogen — a chemical element in frozen liquid state that has now become a trendy food and beverage gimmick — and when she swallows the drink it cold burns her stomach so badly doctors have to remove the entire organ. She just turned 18. That nightmarish scenario took place in a Lancaster U.K. bar last Thursday.

Google just keeps killing it.

Perhaps it is because of the freedom we have to explore possibilities that we are often unaware of the depth to many of the simplest resources that are available. It is also without a doubt hard to be constantly adapting one's practice to ever-updating technology applications. Certainly, in this day and age, the sheer volume of resources available in education can be overwhelming. Navigating options and rating their relative value is always intimidating, particularly on the heels of a full 7 hours in front of students. As I continue to stumble upon features in google docs that make my job incredibly easier, I thought it might be valuable to share the simple features I have discovered and am so thankful for. Perhaps no other aspect of the discipline is as important in this regard as a sound appreciation of the lexicon of chemical science. As they say, you need to speak their language before you can consider becoming friends with them. Unfortunately, as often happens with scientific terminology, chemical terms seem to acquire new meanings and lives of their own when they collide with popular culture. A physicist would be aghast when he or she finds out what management consultants and new-age gurus have done with the words "quantum", "energy" and "field".

Similarly we chemists find ourselves getting darker and sinking deeper into our armchairs when we are assailed with new-agers' definitions of "organic", "natural", "artificial" and "pure". 1. 2. 3.
