Jennifer Rohn with tips on how researchers can use social media to engage new audiences. Despite the central role science plays to our way of life, many people are not interested in science or don't understand how it works. Some choose not to believe science's findings. Others even feel it wastes taxpayers' money. Yet scientific solutions are increasingly crucial in overcoming threats to our future, be they climate change, emergent pandemics, dwindling natural resources or the struggle to maintain food security.

Physics. Journal of Research & Practice in Assessment. Cognitive style. Cognitive style or "thinking style" is a term used in cognitive psychology to describe the way individuals think, perceive and remember information.

Cognitive style

Cognitive style differs from cognitive ability (or level), the latter being measured by aptitude tests or so-called intelligence tests. Controversy exists over the exact meaning of the term cognitive style and also as to whether it is a single or multiple dimension of human personality. However, it remains a key concept in the areas of education and management. If a pupil has a cognitive style that is similar to that of his/her teacher, the chances that the pupil will have a more positive learning experience are improved.

Likewise, team members with similar cognitive styles likely feel more positive about their participation with the team. Multi-dimensional models and measures[edit] Prudent avoidance principle. Prudent avoidance is a precautionary principle in risk management , stating that reasonable efforts to minimise potential risks should be taken when the actual magnitude of the risks is unknown.

Prudent avoidance principle

The principle was proposed by Prof. Granger Morgan of Carnegie Mellon University in 1989 in the context of electromagnetic radiation safety (in particular, fields produced by power lines). A report for the Office of Technology Assessment of the US Congress described prudent avoidance of power line fields as: "looking systematically for strategies which can keep people out of 60 Hz fields arising from all sources but only adopt those which look to be "prudent" investments given their cost and our current level of scientific understanding about possible risks. " The principle has been adopted in a number of countries, for example Sweden , Denmark , Norway , Australia and New Zealand .
