Milieu des années 90 à Paris, Janol Apin prend le métro. Sous la pancarte de la station Richard-Lenoir, « un Black » : « Je trouvais ça marrant, ça a été la première photo de la série. » De 1995 à 2005, le photographe réalise 110 clichés qui racontent le métro tout en jeux de mots, calembours ou évocations : un éclopé station Invalides ; Napoléon Gare-d’Austerlitz ; un cardinal Cardinal-Lemoine ; deux taulards Rue-des-Boulets ; un jardinier à Maraîchers ; un père assis sur une chaise à Père-Lachaise ; un écolier à la station Quatre-Septembre.
