Amazon.co. You see grids all the time. Where I am typing right now, for instance, there is a gridwork of tiles on the floor, cement blocks on the walls, in the lines on my appointment book or my wall calendar, and there must be one of pixels on my computer screen too small to see. Grids are not a natural phenomenon, but seem to be produced as a natural consequence of human activity and human thought in many different spheres. This is the point of _The Grid Book_ (MIT Press) by art historian Hannah B.

Higgins. You'd expect an art historian to include plenty about paintings (especially those by Piet Mondrian), and Higgins does, but she admits she sees grids everywhere, and anyone who reads this wide-ranging book will, too. Grids evolve, Higgins says, but not in isolation: "Rather, the quality of each grid progressing to the next ties them to political, social, economic, and religious histories, each grid aligning with a different universalizing scheme. " Amazon.co. Edward Tufte's three previous books -- The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, Envisioning Information, and Visual Explantions -- were good purchases.

They're the sort of book that I go back to again and again, sometimes just browsing through just to get a little inspiration. Consequently, I looked forward to receiving Tufte's fourth major book on information design, Beautiful Evidence. There was something different about reading this book compared to the others, though. Tufte has posted several sections on his discussion board well in advance to get feedback on the ideas. I was one of the many "Kindly Contributors," as Tufte calls them, on those chapters, particularly one on phylogenetic trees. Furthermore, a cursory glance reveals many examples that Tufte has already talked about at some length in his earlier three books. Given that a good chunk of the book was already familiar to me, was there anything new to be learned? Amazon.co. For over 50 years now, Jean-Luc Godard's work in cinema and video has innovated, provoked and inspired. Since the completion in 1998 of Histoire(s) du cinema, Godard has featured strongly in debates about audiovisual art and culture, especially regarding questions of historical memory, technological change, and the future of cinema in all its forms.

This historical moment provides the perfect opportunity for a critical reassessment and redefinition of Godard's entire corpus and its key role within contemporary culture. With 22 lavishly illustrated chapters, as well as a photo essay and visual filmography, "For Ever Godard" aims to do critical justice to the full sweep of Godard's artistic interests and preoccupations. The volume presents material by scholars and practitioners from film and media studies, art history, musicology, philosophy and aesthetics, museum studies, French studies, European history, cultural studies, and feminism and gender studies. Amazon.co. Book Description Publication Date: 11 Jun 2007 Now published in paperback, this book is the first systematic study to explore the way in which words have encroached on the visual arts from the late 19th century to the present day.

From the Impressionists to contemporary practitioners, Writing on the Wall shows how artists have responded to an environment increasingly saturated with words, and how the mass media has adopted and adapted artistic devices in typography, propaganda and advertising. Amazon.co. 5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for the Dziga Vertov Group films 30 May 2006 This book is the best overview of Godard's work in the late 60s. Specifically, that of the Dziga Vertov Group's (Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin) wildly experimental films. Save for "Tout va Bien" (bless you Criterion!) , these films are rarely seen. The books features many great stills so that one can get a sense of what the film looked like. Amazon.co. Barbara Kruger's art, often pairing appropriated black & white photos with blocks of bold-faced type, has appeared on billboards, bus placards, posters, t-shirts and even shopping bags.

She was big on circulating her stuff outside of conventional venues such as galleries and exhibits. This book showcases her brilliant work with plenty of full-page plates as well as photos of her installations and projects. There's a brief introduction covering her early design work for "Mademoiselle" magazine in the '60s and for various book covers in the '70s, up through her progression into the art world by the '80s. The pages of text are accompanied by assorted quotes from a variety of individuals (Edgar Allen Poe, Mae West, Sandra Bernhard).

The influence of Kruger's stuff continues to turn up. Her work has been lifted for music videos (Motley Crue, Rage Against The Machine) and album covers (Snog, Consolidated), and her style is commonly imitated by lazy advertisers. Amazon.co. These essays by art historian and critic Charles Harrison are based on the premise that making art and talking about art are related enterprises.

They are written from the point of view of Art & Language, the artistic movement based in England -- and briefly in the United States -- with which Harrison has been associated for thirty years. Harrison uses the work of Art & Language as a central case study to discuss developments in art from the 1950s through the 1980s.According to Harrison, the strongest motivation for writing about art is that it brings us closer to that which is other than ourselves.

In seeing how a work is done, we learn about its achieved identity: we see, for example, that a drip on a Pollock is integral to its technical character, whereas a drip on a Mondrian would not be.
