Transformaking 2015 | The International Summit on Critical and Transformative Making, Yogyakarta, Indonesia 2015. Manifeste.
L. L. Mais attention ! L. L. L. What to Know About the Maker Movement and Why You Should Care. This entire week, events around Washington, DC have been centered on spotlighting the Maker Movement – a group comprised of craftspeople, tinkerers, hobbyists, inventors, and overall enthusiasts, all of whom engage in the act of creating. Rather than the mere inventors of the past, these do-it-yourself “makers” have access to modern technologies, robust resources, and an easily accessible network of support that enables them to take part in the global economy. “[There is a] do-it-yourself (DIY) producer society, driven by grassroots movements in tinkering, entrepreneurship, and small-scale manufacturing, [that] has the potential to transform how we think and talk about American manufacturing – as well as its role in the U.S. economy,” said Kauffman Foundation Director of Research and Policy Dane Stangler and Research Analyst Kate Maxwell, in a 2012 paper titled “DIY Producer Society” published in Innovations.

Forty years after Apollo 11 landed on the moon, NASA open sourced the software code that ran the guidance systems on the lunar module. By that time, the code was little more than a novelty. But in recent years, the space agency has built all sorts of other software that is still on the cutting edge. And as it turns out, like the Apollo 11 code, much of this NASA software is available for public use, meaning anyone can download it and run it and adapt it for free. You can even use it in commercial products. But don’t take our word for it. Next Thursday, NASA will release a master list of software projects it has cooked up over the years. This NASA software catalog will list more than 1,000 projects, and it will show you how to actually obtain the code you want.
Click to Open Overlay Gallery NASA has run a technology transfer program for over 50 years. Already, NASA software has been used to do some pretty amazing stuff outside the agency. It was no easy task. Concept: Intimate Care Products. Save, Create and run your own pirate bay. Sometimes, the realities of the marketplace mean that companies simply cannot justify making a product for a niche application, and this can be particularly true for high-tech items such as medical devices that may have a tiny user base. Thankfully, the power of open-source collaboration – combined with the versatility of additive manufacturing techniques – means that products can now be made that bypass the traditional commercialization route. A perfect example can be found in a collaborative design effort to create a dispensing device for medicines used to treat the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF), spearheaded by researchers in the UK. The team – from Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield and the CF unit at Northern General Hospital – enlisted the aid of patients in the design of the new dispenser, which aim to overcome some of the barriers to treatment with Creon, an enzyme preparation that is used to help CF patients digest food.
Animated Turn Signals. The controller is a PICAXE-14M which uses a ULN2803 darlington driver to drive the LEDs. On my car, there is no constant 12v supply to the tail lights, so I designed the circuit to operate in two modes. When the controller sees that the tail lights are on, it does the animation. When the tail lights are off (and its only getting intermittent power from each blink) all the LEDs turn on like normal turn signals. The normal mode also seems to give a little more visibility during the daylight. Animated: Normal: The code is pretty simplistic. Since its a PICAXE, the code is written in BASIC. There is also a big fat 10W power resistor. The schematics and PCB were designed in Fritzing. 10 Reasons To Use Open Source Software-Defined Networking. 3D Printing and the Challenge of Intellectual Property. I’m sure you have been in the situation at home where you have misplaced an important part of your vacuum cleaner, broke a key of your laptop, or even worse, the handle of your favorite pan.
Such items could be easily replaced with the help of a 3D printer. But why aren’t the masses embracing 3D printing? Most technology experts give these three answers to this question: Slow printing speedLow printing qualityRelatively high price of quality printers These answers are correct, but experts usually omit a crucial, fourth aspect which is a similarly huge barrier of breakthrough.
The lack of quality 3D printing models. If we observe current sources where we can get 3D printing models from, the largest share of their supply are fancy goods, toys, and other purely decorative plastic items. One of the reasons for this is that the supply follows the current technological and market conditions, but this is not entirely true.

Internet of Things - RasPi Espresso Machine iSPRESSO. North Atlantic Books - The Open-Source Everything Manifesto. What the world lacks right now—especially the United States, where every form of organization from government to banks to labor unions has betrayed the public trust—is integrity. Also lacking is public intelligence in the sense of decision-support: knowing what one needs to know in order to make honest decisions for the good of all, rather than corrupt decisions for the good of the few.
The Open-Source Everything Manifesto is a distillation of author, strategist, analyst, and reformer Robert David Steele life's work: the transition from top-down secret command and control to a world of bottom-up, consensual, collective decision-making as a means to solve the major crises facing our world today. The book is intended to be a catalyst for citizen dialog and deliberation, and for inspiring the continued evolution of a nation in which all citizens realize our shared aspiration of direct democracy—informed participatory democracy.

Robert David Steele, former Marine, CIA case officer, and US co-founder of the US Marine Corps intelligence activity, is a man on a mission. But it's a mission that frightens the US intelligence establishment to its core. With 18 years experience working across the US intelligence community, followed by 20 more years in commercial intelligence and training, Steele's exemplary career has spanned almost all areas of both the clandestine world. Steele started off as a Marine Corps infantry and intelligence officer. After four years on active duty, he joined the CIA for about a decade before co-founding the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity, where he was deputy director. Widely recognised as the leader of the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) paradigm, Steele went on to write the handbooks on OSINT for NATO, the US Defense Intelligence Agency and the U.S.
But the CIA wasn't happy, and ensured that Steele was prohibited from running a second conference.
