Did you receive a gift of a new iPad this year? If so, you’re probably spending this holiday vacation week trying out all kinds of new apps. Here are ten that I recommend getting started with.
The iPad is such a boon in education. It is making a slow but steadfast revolution in the way instruction is both delivered and received. Teachers Simple Guide on The Use of iPad in Education clearly manifests this transfrmation and provides tips on how educators can leverage the power of this device in educational settings. One of the things I like the most about iPad is its ability to support all the major e-reader platforms. Its interactivity and audio capabilities have even added a new dimension to read alouds and bedtime stories, making it an ideal device for digital storytelling.
One of the things that really excites me about the iPad is the ability of the students to show their learning. I am not talking about the end product here, I am talking about the act of learning that can be shown by students recording their processes. It is often about the student putting the information they have learnt into a context. It is this contextualisation that helps the students create meaning. Here is a perfect example from a young 1st grade student who talks us through his investigation into transport. This example was shown on a recent school visit as one way a student could document their own learning.
Partially excerpted from the new book, " iPads in Education for Dummies " by Sam Gliksman In between repeatedly imploring my youngest son to turn off the XBox, iPad, his mother's iPhone and every other device we have around the house, I get the occasional flashback to when I was his age. In my flashback, it's a weekday and the time is somewhere around 5pm. I've just come home from school and I'm glued to the 17th repeat of an episode of Get Smart or Gilligan's Island.
When it comes to searching for educational apps to install on your iPad it feels like you get drowned in an avalanche of apps and resources from which you emerge empty-handed. Everyday new apps go viral and to keep up with the updates in this field is really a daunting challenge. Thankfully, there are many trusted educational resources ( this blog is one of them ) where educators and teachers can get to discover and learn about new useful apps to use in education. Another trusted resource is Langwitch es whose images I am sharing with you below.

Another trusted resource is Langwitch es whose images I am sharing with you below. Langwitches has done a great job in coming up with a list of great educational iPad apps organized into categories with different headings. The only thing that is missing in his work and which if he had paid attention to would have made his work even way greater is to make the app images clickable.
After seeing the chart on of Bloom's Taxonomy on bloomsapps , I thought I could make a more thorough table. I like the headings that were used in the chart. I’ve spent a lot of time on this blog lately reflecting on Big Education ideas. During that time, my little buddy the iPad has felt a little neglected and unloved. So I thought I’d get back to talking about everybody’s “favourite little tablet that could”.
Curated App Lists
Millions of apps vie for educators' attention. And with limited time and budgets, it's not always easy to find the ones that will keep students' attention and teach them at the same time. As school districts search for the few quality apps that will fit into their curriculum, instructional technology staff at three elementary school districts shared how they measure and find quality apps. What is a quality app? Not all apps are created equal.
I’ve been weighing whether or not to re-institute a new monthly feature here, something that I used to write for MindShift : a post highlighting some of the new and updated educational apps that have been released over the past 30 days or so. I say “or so” here as this is the first time doing this in about six months, and I’m including below a few apps that were updated in late April rather than in May. Clearly this isn’t an exhaustive list of new apps – it’s “some” of them. I’ve picked 7. Move the Turtle Remember Logo ?
