The untapped potential of WiFi in emergencies. It is in times of crisis that we need our communication networks most - especially our mobile networks - but they often fail.

The untapped potential of WiFi in emergencies

Even those that survive the hit of a natural or urban disaster may go into meltdown under the strain of all the people dialing the emergency services, or their loved ones, in their time of need. But researchers from Darmstadt in Germany have been looking into the possibility of establishing crisis communication networks that can automatically "piggyback" domestic wireless routers (using WiFi) in densely populated urban areas. "It could help workers in disaster areas to stay in contact with the public and central area control - even when mobile signal towers are down," says Kamill Panitzek, one of the researchers at the Telecooperation Lab at Darmstadt's Technical University.

Panitzek and his team will publish their findings in the International Journal of Mobile Network Design and Innovation. The Serval Project presents Rhizome - Self Replicating Software and Data Distri. Bullet. Ubiquiti Networks, Inc. Mesh networking can revolutionize the Internet. What would be the perfect solution for a decentralized mesh network? I’ve been thinking about this question for a long time. When I see other people talk about mesh, there seems to be a vision of endpoint devices that share with each other. Laptops, cell phones, cameras, printers, televisions, and even cars: A future where anything with a wireless connection shares responsibility to build a network.

Satellites in the shed? TEDGlobal announces the new DIY revolution. Once upon a time, if you said you were doing a spot of DIY, everyone would know you'd be doing something involving wobbly ladders, pots of paint and, depending on the decade, either stripping your floors or recarpeting them.

No more. Or at least ladders and pots of paint might still be involved, but the end result could be a aerial drone you've built yourself. Big Tent 2012. In times of crisis, more and more people in Asia-Pacific and around the world are turning to the web and new technologies to: connect with loved ones locate food and shelter find evacuation routes access medical care, and help those affected, near and far Technology is playing an increasingly important role in how we cope with disasters - from students in New Zealand using social networks to form a volunteer armyafter the Christchurch earthquake, to families in Japan turning to photo sharing services to find loved ones feared lost in last year's tsunami.

Big Tent 2012

We’re only beginning to understand its potential. To explore this potential, and to understand the ways technology can be used to reduce the impact and cost of disasters, we’re hosting a ‘Big Tent’ in Sendai, Japan, on 2 July. Open-source hardware is on its way, and it will foster a new era of innovation, according to MIT Media Lab director Joichi “Joi” Ito.

Joi Ito: Open-source hardware is a no brainer

The emergence of freely available hardware designs and near-free components will unleash the same sort of technology innovation that open-source software kicked off a decade or so ago, Ito said Tuesday. “If you want to build a video camera, some day you’ll be able to find all the standard parts, the designs online for free, and then you’ll only design the pieces of the product that interest you,” Ito said at an MITX fireside chat in Cambridge, Mass.

Developers would focus their attention on the more valuable hardware they build atop that standard base, just as software developers write specialized software that runs on Linux and open-source middleware instead of proprietary Unix or Windows operating systems and Oracle’s WebLogic or IBM’s WebSphere middleware. Ito used the birth of Google as an example of the creativity open-source software enabled. Why Wireless Mesh Networks Will Save Us From Censorship. life and times of sha.ddih » Why wireless mesh networks won’t save us from censorship

It's exciting to see so much interest of late in the Darknet Plan hatched by redditors to build a second, people-owned, censorship-free Internet using a large-scale wireless mesh network. Freedom of speech on the Internet is an important issue and it's important for all of us to take it seriously. Everything I need to know about startups, I learned from a crime boss.
