Tofu Veggie Summer Rolls with Spicy Almond Butter Sauce. This blog post is in collaboration with iHerb but all opinions are my own.
Summer rolls have a special place in my heart. When thinking back to my early blogging days, I often hesitated with what I was writing and putting out into the world. Maybe other bloggers can relate, but hitting ‘publish’ on a new post provides a varying rush of adrenaline, depending on how controversial or personal the post may be. In the beginning of my blogging journey, I felt a rush with every new post… which makes me laugh but after a year of consistently posting three times per week, my voice started to shine through and I gained more confidence, even though I was still second-guessing my words, re-writing each post 5 times and reading it over 10 before I felt comfortable hitting ‘publish’.
Everything about the plant based lifestyle was new to me; I didn’t want to share anything misleading or wrong! There’s a special moment during my first year of blogging that sticks out in my mind. Wait, whaaaa?! Sweet Potato Avocado Tartare Recipe - Love and Lemons. I’m so behind with the trends.
Do you know that avocado toast has become avocado “toast” with quotation marks? People are using sweet potatoes as the “bread” and the first time I saw that oh-so-clickable headline I thought it was ridiculous. One morning though, desperate times called for desperate measures. Super Easy Hot Pepper Jelly. Turmeric Cashews Recipe. Some fascinating emails have come through my in-box over the past decade.
One example arrived a couple of months ago from Erica Sonnenburg. Erica and her husband, Justin Sonnenburg, are researchers at Stanford where they study the collection of bacteria that inhabit our gut. It's called the microbiota. Her name struck me as familiar because the Sonnenburgs, both Ph.D.s, were included in Michael Pollan's article - Some of My Best Friends are Germs from May 2013. Her note went on to say they often cook recipes from 101 Cookbooks because many of them have the hallmarks of "good microbiota food". When it comes to broad strokes, I get it. So fresh: papaya salad rolls. Pin it!
Pin it! I handed in my cookbook manuscript the other day and totally crashed afterward. I thought it would be this moment fraught with emotion and triumph, but really I just wanted a shower and a nap. Not a celebratory drink in sight! Also, truth bomb: the month leading up to my due date saw more pizza nights than you might expect from the future author of a higher vibrational frequency cookbook. Vegan Creamy Cashew Cheese. Figgy Focaccia Recipe. Dinner Tonight: Roasted Fennel Tomato Sauce. Due to unhappy experiences with licorice at Grandmother's as a child, I've long been an anisephobic eater.
I don't think I'm alone—the flavor of black licorice is distinct enough to have long spawned lovers and haters. I was, and still am, a hater. And more than that, for a long time, even foods that vaguely tasted of the stuff (like tarragon and fennel) sent me running. Crispy Baked Spicy Pumpkin Wontons. Sadly, I haven’t always been kind to pumpkins. Quickly dismissed as something to be decorated and displayed, while other squashes make the cut and are happily cooked and eaten.
That all changed last year when I tried pumpkin curry for the first time at a Thai restaurant. I had an epiphany; pumpkin is yummy in a savory dish. No longer shunned, I grabbed a couple cans from Trader Joe’s mountain of canned organic pumpkin puree before they’re all gone (15 oz can for $1.99). Baked wontons are easy and quick to assemble, especially using the canned pumpkin.

Garlic naan, garlic naan on stove top and oven, garlic naan recipe. Garlic naan recipe on stove top and oven with step by step photos – made the garlic naan some days back. this recipe of garlic naan on stove top was requested by my dear reader suhani. the garlic naan was so good. it is exactly the way a naan should be. not at all chewy & hard the way we get in restaurants. the garlic naan is light, soft and the garlic enhances the flavor so much. along with garlic i added some celery too. instead of celery you can use coriander leaves. garlic and celery both blended well in this naan and made it an aromatic and strongly flavored naan and we enjoyed the garlic naan with some amritsari chole. other naan recipes on the blog are whole wheat naan, naan recipe with yeast, naan without yeast and whole wheat butter naan recipe. lets start step by step garlic naan recipe: 1: in a large bowl or pan take 3/4th cup lukewarm water. dissolve sugar in the warm water. then add the yeast to it and stir. 3: the yeast has bubbled up… 7: make medium size balls from the dough.
Avocado tartare with roasted beets, basil + dukkah. The last week or so has been a sent-from-the-universe-and-thank-goodness reminder that everyone’s fighting a tough battle if you listen or look hard enough–or even if you just listen and look on a basic level of human awareness. I’ve been pulling back on the online life a bit as a call to action/but also possibly just as a natural reaction to it all. Ever try that? Just kind of having a passive involvement in the goings on of the internet, or not even offering recognition to an actual, separate “online life” as it were?
Avocado Coconut Oil Tartine Recipe. One of the reasons I prefer open-faced tartine sandwiches to other styles, is the bread ratio. While I love good bread, and wholeheartedly embrace the idea of it alongside all manner of slices and slathers, two thick slabs isn't typically what I crave. Tina and I were in the kitchen on Friday prepping a few salads for this little guy's fifth(!)
Birthday party, and early in the afternoon we threw together some tartines for our own lunch. I know a lot of you appreciate the magic that is smashed avocado and black pepper over a nice piece of toasted levain - but this tartine, in particular, takes that general concept to a different level entirely. The idea is this: a slather of pure coconut oil topped with smashed avocado, and finished with garlicky toasted macadamia nuts, squash blossoms, and slivered scallions.
If you're in a pinch to find squash blossoms, slivered basil is a perfectly fine substitution. Cauliflower and roasted garbanzo “rice + peas”
