If I can make it myself, I try to. You may remember my post a while back about Homemade Deodorant. If you haven't seen it yet be sure to check it out. Today I decided to share my homemade tooth powder and tooth paste recipes. The taste will be different than you are used to, since they use no sweeteners, so you may need a few days to adjust to the flavor. Tooth PowderThis is super basic, you already have this stuff in your cupboards. Simply mix together: Baking Soda (roughly 1/4 cup) and Salt (1 teaspoon) in a small dish. Tooth Paste I prefer using the paste these days. In a small container with a lid, combine: Baking soda (1/4 cup), Water (1/2 teaspoon), and Dr. Grab a little bit (about a pea size amount) with the tip of your toothbrush and brush as normal. Not only does this stuff save the energy it takes to make, package, advertise & ship commercial toothpaste, but it also works better, and you use less of it making it last longer.

The bananas were from the "extremely ripe so we are discounting them" section at my local grocery store that I mentioned in an earlier post. The berries were foraged locally from bushes just blocks from my house. This recipe can be used with regular or gluten free flour. I've used both and they both work great. The pine nuts alone will set you back $19 or so a pound.I love pine nuts but just can't stomach shelling that much out for a nut.This year I decided to come up with a super easy, healthy and CHEAP recipe for making delicious pesto. Ingredients: (all are rough estimates)*1 cup packed basil leaves (got mine from my garden)*3/4 cup packed chard or spinach leaves (also from my garden)*1/3 cup almond meal (this was the cheapest available nut at Trader Joes. It came already ground in to a meal and was cheaper for the same weight than buying whole nuts. If you want to make it even cheaper you can use Sunflower Seeds)*2 garlic cloves (add more to taste)*Drizzle olive oil till it gets to the consistency you like.

I'm not sure that this is the right place to put this, but it seemed the closest. If it should go somewhere else let me know.Being an environmentally conscious (if not perfectly environmentally responsible-I drive when I don't absolutely need to and dry my clothes with an electric dryer in the middle of summer, among other things) type, I hate throwing away kitchen scraps. I also have a great container garden on my patio that could use some fertilizer, but the organic stuff is quite expensive.However, our yard is xeriscaped, so we don't really need, or have room for, a compost heap.I decided that vermicomposting (vermi=worms) was the way to go.

After some tweaking of the recipe, I am pleased with the results and don't plan on buying the store brand stuff ever again. Here's what I did: Girl on bikes homemade deodorant. *1/4 cup baking soda *1/4 cup cornstarch *1/2 tsp tea tree, lavender, &/or your favorite scented oil (tea tree works best because of it's antibacterial properties) *1 tbsp+ coconut oil Mix baking soda & cornstarch in a bowl with the oil or oil blend of your choice. Stir in coconut oil in until it’s the consistency you like. (mix it quite a bit before adding more) Shape into disk or smash in to empty deodorant container.
