http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/08/hurricane-irene/100138/ Over the past week, Hurricane Irene grew from a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean to a category 3 hurricane as it blew north along the East Coast of the United States. High winds and tremendous rainfall downed trees and battered shorelines, leaving millions without power and causing some 26 deaths across nine states. Though Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm as it made landfall in New York, the heavy downpours have caused flooding problems across many states that are still unfolding. Collected below are some images from the brief, eventful life of Hurricane Irene. [ 40 photos ]

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2011/08/stellar-by-ignacio-torres/ Beautifully executed animations by Texas photographer Ignacio Torres from his series Stellar . Via his website: This project began from the theory that humans are made of cosmic matter as a result of a stars death. I created imagery that showcased this cosmic birth through the use of dust and reflective confetti to create galaxies. The models organic bodily expressions as they are frozen in time between the particles suggest their celestial creation.

http://www.devicemag.com/2010/04/29/abandoned-technology-scattered-across-the-globe/ What would we do without technology? Often though, whether from disaster or lack of funding, celebrated technology becomes obsolete and is abandoned. Decay sets in to rust the disused places and objects which were once invaluable to us. Here are defunct and abandoned technologies such as power plants, amusement parks, factories, ships, aircraft, oil rigs, and military installations. Abandoned Balaklava Submarine Base

Abandoned Technology Scattered Across The Globe

I am traveling with Austin Mann in Ethiopia working on the final prep for our Light The World workshop . We looked up to the sky to see the strangest thing i’ve probably ever seen. What on earth could it be. We just sat in wonder as the colors changed and shifted shapes behind the clouds.

http://www.escapeintolife.com/photography/rune-guneriussen/ These dream-like installations are assembled, and then photographed by Norwegian artist Rune Guneriussen. Just imagine being out for a walk in Norway’s countryside, turning a corner and discovering a magical forest of lamps, a tangle of chairs, or a river of books. Sadly, once the photograph is taken, Rune removes the installation, the only proof of it’s existence being these images… sort of like waking up from an amazing dream that you could have sworn was real. As an artist, I believe strongly that art itself should be questioning and bewildering as opposed to patronising and restricting. As opposed to the current fashion I do not want to dictate a way to the understanding of my art, but rather indicate a path to understanding a story.

Austrian iconoclast Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) triumphed over childhood poverty to significantly influence the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau movement. Klimt’s elaborate, explicitly sensual works expressed themes of regeneration, love and death, and incorporated Egyptian, Classical Greek, Byzantine and Medieval styles. Klimt also utilized symbols representing art’s liberation from traditional culture. Laying the groundwork for Art Deco and Modernism, Klimt’s creative influence can still be seen in today’s art, decorations and jewelry. http://www.allposters.com/es/sp.asp?apnum=2549116&pagetype=sp&title=The-Kiss-c-1907-Posters&aid=85097&LinkTypeID=1&PosterTypeID=1&DestType=7&Referrer=http://www.artcyclopedia.com/mostpopular.html&writeTeaLeafComments=False
