Over the past week, Hurricane Irene grew from a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean to a category 3 hurricane as it blew north along the East Coast of the United States. High winds and tremendous rainfall downed trees and battered shorelines, leaving millions without power and causing some 26 deaths across nine states. Though Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm as it made landfall in New York, the heavy downpours have caused flooding problems across many states that are still unfolding. Collected below are some images from the brief, eventful life of Hurricane Irene. [ 40 photos ]
Photographer Molly Strohl has dozens of amazing self-portraits over on Flickr, but these two really caught my attention. Haunting and beautiful work.
Beautifully executed animations by Texas photographer Ignacio Torres from his series Stellar . Via his website: This project began from the theory that humans are made of cosmic matter as a result of a stars death. I created imagery that showcased this cosmic birth through the use of dust and reflective confetti to create galaxies. The models organic bodily expressions as they are frozen in time between the particles suggest their celestial creation.
whenever I see the unconditional love of animals by people I am very happy, they deserve, because they do not judge us, they do not doubt, do not look at whether we are rich or poor, they just want our dedication and love above all ..
I am traveling with Austin Mann in Ethiopia working on the final prep for our Light The World workshop . We looked up to the sky to see the strangest thing i’ve probably ever seen. What on earth could it be. We just sat in wonder as the colors changed and shifted shapes behind the clouds.
It is difficult to find happiness in the world we are living today. There is war, violence and terrorism everywhere. But still, sadness and happiness are part of life; sometimes we are happy sometimes we are sad, depressed and dismayed but the life goes on. Today I have collected 80 photographs which will reflect happiness, a small gift from my side to all of you. Always keep smiling and try to find happiness in everything.
These dream-like installations are assembled, and then photographed by Norwegian artist Rune Guneriussen. Just imagine being out for a walk in Norway’s countryside, turning a corner and discovering a magical forest of lamps, a tangle of chairs, or a river of books. Sadly, once the photograph is taken, Rune removes the installation, the only proof of it’s existence being these images… sort of like waking up from an amazing dream that you could have sworn was real. As an artist, I believe strongly that art itself should be questioning and bewildering as opposed to patronising and restricting. As opposed to the current fashion I do not want to dictate a way to the understanding of my art, but rather indicate a path to understanding a story.

Hi Alice I'll try to name as many of the places as I can. I'm a resident of St Petersburg so I can help with some of them, others will be guesses. I'm not a historian, so what I am writing is not gospel! - I believe this next one is taken in a small garden, just behind Taverichesky Garden in St P, near Kavelergardskaya Street, but I may be wrong as a lot of the gardens in St P look very similar.
